Best save % over the last two seasons including playoffs He's a star and look for him to be in the Vezina running. - Boinker
He's been a truly great backup goaltender these past two years. It's just far too early to state he's a top 5 goaltender right now. |

Nick Schultz is solid no doubt. But Petry is awful. there are a few teams in the ahl where he would be no better then a #4 d man. Just cause the oilers are forced to put him out there due to lack of options, doesn't make him decent - Bieksa#3
Stop being a fool. The mere fact that our AHL team was tops in the conference and Petry would easily have been the #1 there shows you're being somewhat hyperbolic. Lack of options, sure, we don't have a great defense, but you could have made that point without being a total homer. |

Hmm.....I guess with your ability to foretell the future you should have seen the Canucks would never win a Stanley Cup.
Heck, even Calgary has a cup.
We will see if your tune has changed as the Canucks performance continues to head South while the Oilers youth continues to develop. As for signing them. It won't be a problem. |

But thats all Canuck fans have. The franchise has never won anything so they have to be internet warriors and beat their chests about how great the Canucks are. Then when the team fails to win the cup our seriously under performs expectations they are quiet for a week.

Riddle me this...
If all you ever hear is that the Oilers have no-one outside of the kids, and every single player on the Oilers except Horcoff will be a free agent by the time we have Hall, Ebs, Nuge and Yakupov off their ELCs, exactly what is standing in the way of our re-signing them? |

U haven seen him play have u? Maybe a couple times against the canucks??
Dont just say yes to save face either.
Up until about december the jury was still completely out on petry.
A great skater, but nothing else in his game was nhl level.
Then, in a 2 month period he developed exponentially.
Started using his skating, more effective on the pp, but mostly used his frame and started making better decisions in the defensive zone.
He still makes mistakes and has developing to do, but he showed flashes of brilliance.
To say hes terrible is not only totally wrong.. Its clueless

To be fair, he said one of the best, not the best... I haven't really ranked top 4's or anything, but I know Vancouver does have a pretty decent one. Behind LA, but they're not bad.
As for Schneider... What are people's top 5 if he is in there? - bluecoconuts
Goalies better than Schnieder in no particular order:
Quick
Lundquist
Rinne
Price
Thomas (was)
Kipprusoff
Miller
Howard
Vokoun
Halak
Fluery
Smith
Luongo still is as much as you won't admit
Wait till he gets 60 starts this year before you call him a Top 5 goalie.

Have u not seen his posts before? You're wasting time with any logic.
It'll be a quick homer canuck quip followed by bashing edm or somethin.
Not a real hockey fan. Just a fan of the 'home team'. It's funny actually |

This is coming from the guy who trolled every Oiler blog laughing at the idea of Schultz signing with us.
Ill take your opinion with a grain of salt. |

In no particular order - Rinne, Lundqvist, Quick, Halak & Smith. I would put Schneider in the very next group and Smith is a bit of a one hit wonder, but based on last season. |

If you're pinning that on him this early with limited playing time then you're building yourself up for running this kid out of town. |

There's already been a few of us that have agreed with you on the "wait and see" approach before calling him out as top 5, but that doesn't seem to stop you from jumping all over it like a jack rabbit.
I'm not here to defend Ian but what he did say was, "I consider him to be top 5 in the NHL and I think we will see that this year." Obviously we haven't seen it yet and Ian is stating his belief that this year will vindicate that opinion. He didn't say that he was already a bonafide top 5 guy based on his record to date as a back-up.
We have high hopes for the guy here but time will tell if those hopes are justified or not. |

I'm not pinning anything on him. I'm basing my opinion on results from the past couple seasons. He isn't a kid anymore, he took his AHL team to the finals a few years back, he played in several high stress games the past two years, he got one extended run when Luongo was injured, and continued it even though Luongo was ready to play again and he allowed 4 goals in three games against the Stanley Cup champs. It's a small sample, only three games, but Schneider had a .960 save percentage in the playoffs last year and 1.31 GAA, the kid is going to be great. |

This was in response to a comment that Ian must be on drugs and that he wrote a "pointless article." Obviously calling out one blogger in defending another isn't the greatest, but keep in mind which blog you're in. |

So he gets immunity from criticism that Schneider is not a top 5 goalie, but no immunity from criticism that that's a wacked out opinion/prediction. |

Is that what people are criticizing? That his prediction is whacked out? I must have missed that cuz all I saw were people calling out that he's not currently a top 5 goalie.
Anyway, a prediction is a prediction. There's nothing to state it as right or wrong until the games are played so where would the argument go anyway? |

What a pointless article?
Did you really need to waste however long it took to write this, in order to determine that the Canucks have a better (and by better read, more developed) team at the point in history then the Oilers do?
Any genius with access to tsn.ca can figure that out. Congrats for writing an essay on the obvious. We all have a fairly good idea how the teams will stack up next season. It's not rocket science.
A worthwhile analysis would be comparing and theorizing how the two teams will stack up in 3 years. - jzaozer
Get over it. It's just something to talk about during the offseason. Nowhere in the write up did Ian insult your team. You don't have to read it.
Holy $hit, some people have to dig deep to find something to complain about. |

I was in part agreeing with you, and part disagreeing with you. Yes you're right to call out people for criticizing something they misread, but we can certainly still modify the original criticism without shame.
Take this: He's not currently a top 5 goalie, and there's no particular reason to assume that he'll get that much better next season or that goalies ahead of him will get that much worse. Ipso facto, the prediction is out there based on what we know now.
Further, the argument could go lots of ways. Look: I predict Gagner will score 75 points next year.
No one's going to touch that? |
