And you can't use old ones.

Of course... You need upper case.. lower casssseeeee symbols, numbers....

All of that because they can't secure the (frank)ing network properly.

i want to get one of those two

please do all the research and tell me which one to buy ty

- -davies-

I know which one I want, it'll ignite a poopstorm on here, but here goes.

In October Apple is likely to roll out a 21.5 and 27" update of the iMac. They will likely feature retina or 4k displays (as in, you can count the hairs on JVR's Mole during a game), will have new Intel processors, and a graphics card / integration that will be good enough for me to watch HD videos and play some games (yes, Crims: Sims included).

They should have a combo Flash / mechanical drive - which is the main reason I want a desktop vs a laptop that starts at 1TB of storage. I have over 300GB of music alone so having plenty o' leftovers would be nice. I also have 2 iPads, 2 iPhones and a bunch of Apple wireless networking kit in my house, so the synergy of the ecosystem working together is really appealing.

I have an office suite that should still be compatible, but for the household purposes I use this computer for, Google honestly offers what I need for free on the web, with effortless sharing as well.

So Ima go with the 21.5", minumum 1TB storage (will consider the max). The one thing Apple did with the last version that pissed me off was weld the RAM to the unit - i.e. you can't just go in and drop a couple new cards in 3 years down the road when the porn industry has pushed the frontiers of what's capable on the Web again.

If they repeat that this time around, I will need to balance getting some kind of Dell with just buying the maxed RAM. But honestly I'd grown quite fond of buying the base RAM then doubling it a few years later (at a much lower cost) to basically extend the life of my system.

Did that last year with this MacBook i'm typing on. It's several years old but last year I boosted it to 4GB ram (at a cost of about $50 before shipping) and it was like getting a new machine.

i respectfully request you all take your "pc" talk elsewhere...(frank)...all-in-one

"YAY, let's get a non-mobile laptop that we'll have to replace in a few years!!!"

Get a (frank)ing tablet. Its all most people even need anymore. But whatever you do, don't buy an all-in-one.

I haven't even looked into Windows machines, really. I have had a series of Dells for work (zooted to the 9's, mind you) and they have all been pretty good.

it's just a desktop type comp but you don't need that giant thingie looking ugly on the ground any more

i like a big ass monitor and i don't game or build computers which means i should be ashamed or something i guess

- -davies-

I will explain.

For the most part, people use their PC's for the internet, whether it is for facebook, twitter, stupid hockey sites, email...you know, simple poop. Some stream movie and TV programming. Basically, you are using the PC for some low level computing tasks.

All-in-one computers are no better than a tablet in terms of computing power and you sacrifice the mobility of a tablet. Most of the newer all-in-ones cost between 750-1000 bones. This is taking into account that if you are getting something new, you should buy in the leading edge of technology to not obsolete your device in a couple of years.

The new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is about 1000 dollars as well. It has the capability to run all windows office crap, has a detachable keyboard, and you can use it as a scratch pad, and can link to a TV for movies etc. and it only weighs about 2 pounds. The only thing i don't like about it is it only has 512GB of memory compared to a 1 TB for an all in one internally.

So my point is, if you are looking to get a new PC type device, why spend the money on something that will sit on a desk somewhere when you can spend the same amount for something that will do everything you want to do and have the added mobility of a tablet?

Also be reminded that an all in one will not be able to be upgraded in any way, the same holds true for a tablet. I would say that if you don't want the mobility of the tablet, you might as well get a traditional desktop. When technology does outgrow your machine, you can upgrade it for a few hundred dollars instead of spending over 1000 for a new one. Upgrading is not that difficult and is not nearly as expensive even if you pay a nerd to do it for you.

do you have an android or apple phone?

if android get 360 mobile security, it is free and has been rated very high by most mobile software reviewers like digital trends, cnet etc.

Yeah, we're using different terminology. You are referring I think to a glorified tablet with keyboard, whereas I'm referring to something where the CPU and monitor are integrated. It's a desktop, just not one with a unit that connects to a monitor.

my point is that they are glorified tablets that you can't take anywhere and have the same amount of upgrade options as a laptop meaning they only last a few years

Oh, well in that case I just flat disagree.

Desktop systems, generally speaking, have considerably more storage and larger screens (nice for streaming netflix, playing games, etc). Could you imagine carrying a 21.5" laptop?

The computing power comparison, at least for Apple's line, is tilted in favor of the desktops, as well. Compare the mid-level MacBook Pro (brand new configuration) to the mid-level iMac (which is now over 1 year old):

Macbook: 13", 2.5GHz processor, 8GB memory (up to 16), 256MB flash storage (can go to 512). $1,499
iMac: 21.5", 2.7GHz processor, 8GB memory (up to 16), 1TB storage (can configure with combo flash). $1,299

Now those are not stark differences, I'll grant you - but when you bear in mind that the specs for the iMac are a generation behind the ones for the laptop, within the same generation the desktop will outpace the laptop more considerably. And again many of the things you'd do to bring them more in line with one another, say, getting a much larger screen, will tilt the price far more heavily.

I also stated I really want the storage, and don't want to keep using external drives, which suck ass and cut down on that whole portability factor as well.

You're basically paying $200 more for the ability to pick the thing up off your desk and take it with you. For me, that's a big so-what. I have another laptop already, have a tablet - what the f do I need a personal laptop for?

Aside from adding more memory down the road, I will get plenty o' life out of the iMac. Now again, Apple last year released iMacs which you couldn't do that for. Mentioned that might tip the scales for me, depending on whether the new version in October does it. That's also a relatively new change for them, and I agree that it sucks.

I'm not trying to swap in and out equipment other than that, desktop / laptop, whatever. Not one of my hobbies.

And, I'd much prefer a system that doesn't have a separate box and monitor I need to find space for.

And Crims, it will play Sims beautifully.
