I'd call it potential, rather than aspect. Ultimately a social media strategy needs to be rooted in careful consideration of end-user use case studies and clear refinement and internal coordination around business objectives.

Companies can claim success in a 1-m implementation, yet use social as a reach mechanism where ironically they just broadcast existing content via social channels. If that stuff gets read, good job! Many others value social as a depth play, wherein the opportunity to foster a deeper, lasting relationship with end-users wins out, which is probably more what you'd have in mind.

Of course, social marketing can and should be both - but it's important to consider that social rarely is effective at expanding reach, at least not in a good way, lol, and instead generally just ends up disseminating information to the people who were already engaged with your brand anyway. Conversely, real engagement that passes the sniff test generally requires a massive investment in personnel (and to a lesser degree, technology), which many large brands find difficult to maintain.

And when considering the regulatory requirements and/or restrictions faced by companies in financial services or healthcare, actual engagement at scale is tremendously risky.
