No. I have a high efficiency boiler that heats the room from 60 to 70 in about 15 minutes. And one hour obvs wouldn't be worth it. Several hours when I invariably remember 15 minutes after leaving the house is.

My old thermostat was incompatible with the new boiler we had to install. So I got one with Interwebz.

Edit: it's also on a schedule, the app ness is for those "oh poop" moments earlier referenced.

yes and no.

smart meter technology is used by utility companies. See, by connecting your thermostat, the power company can adjust your AC or heat to relieve loading conditions during peak hours if you are not at home. This is beneficial to both parties.

1. The power company saves money because it is not having to outsource power if demand becomes to high.
2. The consumer saves money because your AC/heat is not running like mad when you aren't home.

Another benefit is that if the meter goes dead, it sends the power company a notice. This allows the utility to identify power outages quickly and more efficiently than in the past. If a neighborhood loses power when no one is home, the power company may have no idea. Through these messages from the smart meters, the power outage can be restored before the people come home in most cases.

Of course, the end user must agree to the "load shedding" and my company also installs the meters for free if you sign up for the program.
