He also played half the season because he was a 7th d-man.
Playing against other teams' 4th lines in front of Curtis Joseph doesn't hurt, either. His numbers were far worse everywhere else. - Leeman4Gilmour
Okay I could care less about how he played elsewhere. He played fine with us. Thus the trade isn't one of the worst this franchise has made. That's what my point was the whole time |

Knowing we traded Tukka Rask for Andrew raycroft makes Me want to throw up. And we're still looking for a number one goalie. - lotempio8119
On top of that, we kept Justin Poggie. Who really is running the scouting department at MLS&E? Pee Wee Herman? |

Great blog Mike !
A lot of names from the past including several former players now coaches. It's easy to forget how talented ( and close!) that '77-'78 team was. The Hab's and Dryden were a frigging BUZZSAW in the 70's !!!
Not a fan of the Jason Blake move eh ? |

Haha it's a circus over there. I don't know about you but I love the way alex steen plays the game. He's a good top 6 forward with size and we traded him for lee stempniak. 2 huge pieces we could of had are gone due to stupidity |

I have no idea what the leafs were thinking on that one. Most, close to all NHL goalies were dominate at every other level. Pogge had one or 2 great yrs and they were for some reason convinced. Was it the euro vs Canadian thing? |

He did his job. - Leafland
I really don't believe Belak did his job. He was Colton Orr, but not as feared. He got torn apart by the true heavyweights at the time (Laraque, for example).
He really couldn't fight all that well for a fighter. Certainly not well enough to justify keeping him around as a massive liability everywhere else on the ice. |

Lets not forget how we traded victor stahlberg for kris versteeg who we only had for half a season. And now we lack size up front. He can play in the top 6 on most team I believe |

This is a total myth.
Trading away Rask for Raycroft alone should be sufficient to blow it out of the water, but his lousy drafting record doesn't help, either.
In something like 20+ picks over 4 years, he found us 3 NHLers. Wow. Brilliant.
Pulling names out of a hat would have been equally effective. |

That trade wasn't horrible. Stalberg isn't a top 6 on to many teams. He's far to inconsistant to be relied upon. Versteeg is doing well now. Just had a bad yr. |

Versteeg was, and still is, the better player.
And we then flipped Versteeg for a 1st and a 3rd, which I believe has roughly equal value to Stahlberg.

If somebody offered the hawks a 1st and 3rd for Stalberg, he'd be traded in a heartbeat |

All I'm saying is if you look at the trade now it was pointless. We don't have versteeg and I think we could use stahlberg. When he's consistent he could be a Carlyle type player |

I really don't think Burke/tor should have given up on Versteeg so fast. |

This is a contradiction.
Carlyle-type players aren't inconsistent. He works his players hard, and expects a solid effort from them at all times. You don't get to pick and choose which days you'd like to evaluate a player.
If you only looked at MacArthur on days where he scores 2+ points, he'd be a first ballot HOFer. You can make that statement about everyone. |

I agree 100 percent. I love versteeg wish he would have panned out. I would have waited at least the whole year before I traded him. Imagine if we had him now |

I see Versteeg as a Carlyle guy. Quick, solid at both ends and has a bit of an edge. Can be a little undisipline but that comes with a young guy who plays with an edge |

We're never going to know. I've seen him when he's on and the guy can play but I agree with you completely he's to inconsistent. |

Agreed, and will add it won't be long before Carlyle is sick of Clarke MacCarthur and how lazy he is. |
