Another example of overpaying. Giving up a first rounder for Versteeg. I would of preferred they have kept Versteeg for that price
- MJL

Agreed. Gotta sell high on that kind of investment. What did that pick even turn into? Just curious.

Image. He takes some games off and hes lazy. Isn't a player in Washington that didnt do the same thing. When Hunter took over Semin was a different player imo. I believe he's worth looking at as an option.

And Josh Leivo with 3rd round pick. Don't ask me anything about them. I have no clue!

Nice to see you today at the camp, Bill...the offer to buy my kids stands, BTW.

There were a few guys that stood out today. Shane Harper looked really solid. Nick Cousins did well in the puck drills and showed some feistiness in the battle drills before taking a shot off the foot. Scott Laughton looked good in the second group. Blake Kessel did well in the battle drill, playing defense.

The two that I really noticed were Mike Mangene and Chris Clapperton. Mangene showed a nice shot and good wheels. Kessel handled him in one battle drill, but otherwise, Mangene had a good day.

Clapperton stood out to me more than anyone. He seemed to really be embracing the opportunity. Really good stickhandling on the puck drill, and looked really strong on his skates. He picked a couple of corners in the shooting drills and made a really nice spin move in the battle drill to get away from his defender and pop a backhander top shelf. The only negative he showed was a bit of difficulty handling passes in rush drills, but that could have been bad ice.

Fredrik Larsson, 4th round pick from this year(kid getting the Rocky Tattoo) was also solid in the drills and has a big body. Oliver Laurdissen is a (frank)ing bear of a man. Chase Hatcher, Derian's kid, is a big guy, too, and he looked to have a nice hard shot.

The goalies were kind of a mixed bag. The drills run today were not designed to really show what the goalies could do and they entered them with no warm up shots. Three of the four are over 6'4". Anthony Stolarz and Etienne Marcoux were in the first session. Marcoux is the lone "small" goalie at 6'0" 155lbs. I didn't see the whole first session, though, as the kids had to eat.

In the second session, Cal Heeter was the goalie I focused on. He's big(6'4" 195) and takes up a lot of net. Seemed to have decent mobility for such a big man, but he also seemed to realize that as a guy with a signed contract he wasn't there to earn a deal. However, that could be a result of the drills run, rather than Heeter.

- Jsaquella

Nice!

Was doing some back reading glad I came across this.

With goalies like Hoivenen, and Heeter, big guys, it even makes the Stolarz pick more curious. Sure wish they would have taken Thrower with that second round pick. Odds Stolarz plays an NHL game is probably small.

It's still not as bad as Clarke, who had Vancouver on hold discussing the Garth Snow for Sean Burke trade while telling the media he wasn't trading for a goalie
- Jsaquella

I never minded that, tbh. There's no point tipping one's hand. Now, his tendency to trade a guy just because he took the team to arbitration or his other tendency to decrease a guy's trade value BEFORE he traded him... that's something else.

EDIT: Assume there's a Han Solo pic right above this line.

I think they overspend on contracts given out money wise, but I don't necessarily agree with parting assets to acquire new players. Off the top of my head with Homer in charge:

Fair trades:

Kimmo/Hartnell from Nashville
-Pronger (I know this one can be debated)
-Grossmann
-Richards
-Carter
-Grossmann
-Bryzgalov
-JVR
-Bob

Bad trades:

-Kubina

I'm sure I'm missing more from both sides, but I think Homer has done pretty well in the trade market. Clarkie, not so much.

- ravishingone

unfortunately, I have to adding sending 2nd rnder and gautier for dreck...the upshall fiasco for Carcillo...trading a 1st for eminger and missing out on Carlson...bringing in zherdev...re-signing leighton twice.

What is the motivation though?? He was coming up on UFA status. Maybe Hunter told him he had no qualms with sitting his a$$ if he didn't start to work. Any coincidence he started working his hardest in recent memory coming up on the end of a contract year?

I believe Homer is smart enough to not overpay for Ryan. I do believe it will be Voracek and not Read. Read is just too much value with his contract to move. However, in the end I think they are pretty much done and Voracek may actually sign a multi-year deal, which I'm okay with that happening.
- ravishingone

I'm coming around to a longer contract for semin if that's what it takes. He's 28. I know he has baggage but say 4 years @ $5.5 AAV then turn around and ship Voracek and Read for Ryan.

Hartnell - Giroux - Semin
Schenn - Briere - Ryan
Fedotenko - Couts - Simmonds
Wellwood - Talbot - Rinaldo
Sestito

Flip Ryan and semin if ya want. I can live with this.

I've thought about Semin today. Can't do it. I don't think Holmer and Lava want to do Zherdev 2.0 (albeit more talented). And I can't stomach both Semin and Briere in the top 6, it's just too soft. I'm hoping Holmer stands pat and he can always revaluate with plenty of cap space mid-season

I would sign him for a few years. Its not like we're giving up anything other than cap space. Get some picks for him down the road if it doesnt work out. Just make sure the cap hit is reasonable.

galyeanr11 - Odds Bobby Ryan is a Flyer this year?
Eklund - It is appropriate that this question be first. The Flyers want him, and i keep hearing from those close to him how much he wants to be a Flyers. He will eventually, but it would take Matt Read, Couburn and 1st. No Couturier. Ne Schenns.. I believe it will get done..just not as fast as everyone wants it to...but Anaheim has really screwed over Bobby too many times...imo.

Homer better not trade too much for Ryan. No way can this team lose Coburn.
