Plus, I have a difficult time calling a grown man, Bobby. I don't want the Flyers to inherit this dilemma.

The thing is.. THERE ARE NO D-MEN OUT THERE TO UPGRADE THE DEFENSE. The same people saying we shouldn't trade for Bobby Ryan because we need defense are the same people pissed off about the Suter offer and saying they don't want to overpay Carle.

All the d-men on the market were overpaid this year.

- Flyers2821

I don't think the DEFENSE is a huge concern. We have 5 d-man as is capable of playing 1st or 2nd pair minutes, excluding Carle.

Our team defense is however.

Well, for what it's worth, Clarkie didn't like to be called Bobby.

I think I heard that somewhere.

I'm only 18 though...what do I know....

Holy cow, for violent crimes they are second behind only Detroit in 2010. I'd not have guessed that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ates_cities_by_crime_rate

Second in murder rate, too.

I wasn't even going down that road. The city just sucks.

For food, culture, history, arts, schools - Philadelphia is actually pretty good. Oh yeah, and I forgot, attitude. We are #1 in the nation.

I agree.

Many teams would trade their d unit for Coburn, Grossman, Timonen, Meszaros, Schenn

1st in the nation in crime. I'm very much aware.

Noentheless, if Carle's agent sways him to sign with the team offering the most money, then he probably won't be back regardless of whether or not we land RS.

As we've discussed about other cities. The NHL player does not live in the bad neighborhood of any city. And a small-town guy isn't really concerned about anything but the availability of nice suburbs. It's sure closer to his wife's family (MN or WS). And as a player he's interested in a good team going in the right direction, And no team seemed to be going in a better direction than the vastly improved Blues.

And what defensively responsible forwards were out there that they passed up that would have made such a big difference?

Yeah, I heard. His opinion doesn't mean much to me.

I'd take him for the same contract Calgary gave Hudler. (4 x $4 mil)

You could always sweeten the proposed deal as follows: Jake, MAB, [Cousins/Laughton], and a pick for Ryan.

I would go as far as Read, Jake and a pick.

At that point, you could still make a move for Shane Doan.

Very true. Many Philly atheltes, for example, stay in the city in luxury apartments located in places such as Rittenhouse Square, but plenty more live in the suburbs just outside Philly or in South Jersey.

I am convinced the hang-ups on the signings is the Flyers unexpected huge offers. Probably a team either Suter or Parise didn't even consider at first.

So we lose Read, Jake, Jagr, and JVR and replace that offense with Ryan for sure....and maybe Doan.......I dont know how I feel about that.....not against it, just dont know......

Though if you get Ryan this year, his BFF Perry could come next year!

Lee, Howard, Utley, Hartnell, and others live in the city that I know of.

Many live right by me in SJ, such as Vick, Pronger, DJack, and others.

Even if it resulted in the signing of Shane Doan as well?

Hartnell-Giroux-Ryan
Simmonds-Briere-Schenn
Talbot-Couturier- Doan

That is one sexy top 9.

I can't speak for anyone as an individual, but I think it is a little over the top to suggest all small-town guys are only concerned with nice suburbs. I'm not rich, but I try to take advantage of all the features of Phildelphia that I mentioned in my previous post. I'm not sure I see the logic in a guy trying to squeeze every dollar he can make just so he can shelter himself in a house and not take advantage of those $$ in the outside world.

However, as you mentioned, the location of a guy's family, or even more importantly, his wife's family, can play into a decision strongly.

so because one guy won't instantly fix all of the flyers d woes they should just forget about the issue? if matt read goes with voracek for ryan the flyers would be giving up two forwards that are both more defensively responsible than ryan. i don't hate the idea of trading for ryan, but i don't like the idea of selling the farm for him. and don't say "they aren't trading schenn or couturier"... that's not the issue. trading one of them would be retarded

i'd rather just sign doan

Not sure what the price difference between Doan and Semin will be, but based on their age and talent levels -- I'd rather have Semin. He could be a great sniper playing alongside Briere. And don't let the stereotypes fool you, he's actually an above average player in the defensive zone (for a player of his skill level).
- bradleyc4

the NHL on the Fly crew showed a stat where he has something like the 4th best plus/minus over the last so many years. I only half heard it while getting ready for work
