Good offensive D prospect but so ridiculously overhyped at this point that it's ridiculous. I have said this before: It hurts Anaheim a bit to lose his rights but not as much as some think. They already have a player with virtually the same upside -- Sami Vatanen -- coming over to North America for next season.

If I were Holmgren, the only way I would do a Bobby Ryan trade where I send both a current starting forward and a starting D and a first-round pick is if Vatanen is also coming the other way. Basically a righthanded Kimmo Timonen in training -- very undersized, but skills, moxie and work ethic make up for it.

I agree, the hype is utterly ridiculous.

I love Bobby Ryan......grew up with his cousin and even attended my first game asa 10 year old with his cousin and grandfather so I have always followed him. but that said I am not about to overpay if it were my decision. I would not move the rumored Voracek, dman and a first for him. Just wouldn't do it.

no thats why i said i think mez will get dealt in a deal for ryan?? we have to many d and too much money spent on the d
- griouxmvp2012

In my opinion we don't have too many defenseman. Nor have they spent too much money on the Defense.

Flyers out of Schultz sweepstakes.

Sorry if Leight.

Not that big of a deal imo. Once Carle is re-signed the defense is set.

And why would Anaheim deal a 35-goal PF in Ryan + Vatanen for that package?

I don't see it.

Not if Meszy is dealt.

Appears as though Schultz wants to go to Canada though.

From what was reported he wants an assurance he will be on an NHL roster....probably wants a one way deal ala Read. Perhaps the Flyers aren't willing to give him that. I mean, with the depth this team has on defense I guess not.
- nastyflyergirl

He won't get a one way deal. It will be a ELC deal, which is two way. Read has a 2 way contract.

Do you think Clemmensen will command a larger than 1 mil salary? I wouldn't mind seeing him as a backup
- sulshawn

Only if there are multiple bidders on him. It's a buyer's market for goalies, especially backups, because there are literally a half-dozen similar alternatives available plus some players with NHL experience who would take close to the minimum simply for the chance to stay/get back to the top level in any capacity.

Last year we couldn't buy a healthy defenseman and this year some want to trade more away for a forward. need to learn from experience here.

Is there any chance that the Flyers stand pat in goal this offseason and let Bacashihua, Backlund, Hovinen and possibly Leighton battle it out in training camp and pre-season for the backup spot?  After that, if the Flyers aren't happy, then the could pursue another goalie somehow.  I heard lots of good things about Hovinen though.  Maybe Holmgren thinks he's worth a shot.

I think the Flyers will sign Carle and call it a day with the D-core. Trading away Meszaros defeats the purpose of trading for Schenn. The Flyers wanted to have 6 quality NHL defenseman, and once Carle is signed they will have significantly upgraded from Lilja, Bourdon, and Gustafsson.

Timonen has some physical issues and may not start the Season. Also need to keep his minutes down. Timonen isn't ready, and another injury happens. And then what does your 3rd pair look like? Even worse if Carle doesn't return.

Nor would I. If it was Voracek, Dman, #1 pick in 2013 for Ryan, Vatanen, #2 pick in 2014, my thoughts might change. But the three pieces for just Ryan, no. Too high.

Matt Carle: Defenseman Matt Carle headed for free agency
Matt Carle - D - PHI - Jun. 28 - 9:57 am et
Pending UFA blueliner Matt Carle will head to market Sunday while very much keeping his current team, the Philadelphia Flyers, in the mix, ESPN reports.
Brian Rosenbaum, senior editor of Rotoworld hockey, suggested in an interview on The York Report show on nextsportstar.com that Carle is a possible candidate to join the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Flyers remain very much interested in retaining Carle’s services, so all is not lost for them. But it appears fairly certain that Carle, a terrific puck mover and offensive blueliner, will at least take a peek out there come Sunday. Jun. 28 - 9:57 am et

If Carle signs at 5.5 a year, you'll be happy with that??

- flyersfan51

Nope. Like to keep him at 5m or lower if possible.

Opinions are one thing, but making up numbers and reasons for why something happened to help prove your point is another.

My opinion is he wants to sign for 3.5-4mil. Thats my opinion.

Your correct, I was wrong about Read. But Schultz isn't eligible for a one way deal I believe.
