Was Shanahan largely involved in the community though? Outside of the game, did he do much to support the game or team he played for? Sure he was a great player and put up a ton of points...but I cant recall if he was as solid off the ice as he was on... - noename09
That's a good point too, I don't know the answer. But I know Sundin did A LOT for kids with his volunteer work. I wonder if that has anything to do with it as well. |

I can't believe I'm now at the age where guys I grew up watching are now in the HHOF....that's supposed to be for old guys like Howe, Orr and the odd young guy like Neely. - Juice
Good call. Before it was all guys who had retired before I even watched hockey, now it's starting to be guys that I grew up watching. Well, back to like 2004 with guys like Bourque but I am more and more familar with them every year. It's weird. |

Forsberg has under 1000 points and averaged a point per game.
He's a lock.
Bure was completely deserving. My only issue is mats over shanny. - CBJcurmudgeon
mats was the go to guy for almost his entire tenure.
shanny even on cup winning teams was never the guy in the biggest spotlight. he was the secondary guy behind yzerman and federov (damn that guy was good until he decided that he wanted to retire but still get a pay cheque).

Nope but his playoff numbers are over a point per game too. - pker2theend
Levine said we had to factor cups to dismiss Sundin, while ignoring Bure had none.
It should be totals points, not points per game. |

I just don't believe the Hall should be for players who burn hot and burn out quickly. There are a number of non-HOF guys for whom you could find 4 very good seasons.
The Hall should be reserved for a lifetime of greatness. That's what separates the HOF calibre guys from the merely very good players.
So what your saying is that Bobby Orr should'nt be in the HOF???? He only played 12 years - but in the last 3 replayed a total of 36 games...so lets call it a 9 year career...By you rstandard I guess he's still waiting...Unless he of course palyed for the Leafs.... |

Lindros yes, but not right away.
Naslund will like be in eventually. But I'm glad it wasn't before Sundin. Mats is the highest scoring Swede of all time, I'm sure that has to account for something as well does it not? |

And Hull, and Datsyuk... I'm not knocking the cup, but those Red Wings teams were redonkulously stacked. |

But if you take, say, Jeremy Roenick's first 12 seasons (capturing all of his prime and eliminating his decline), his PPG blows Bure's out of the water.

My problem with the HHOF is that it celebrates longevity over everything else.
Glaring case in point: Mike Gartner.
Yes, most 30 goal seasons ever. Which means he was above average for a long time.
Sorry, he shouldn't be in the Hall.
And don't even get me started about Joe Mullen. |

I would imagine so....I really dont know how much Shanny was apart of his communities or how he was off the ice....if my work day wasnt about over, id look into it....but alas, maybe someone will have the answer!
*looks into the crowd...*

it's difficult to just isolate one aspect and use that as an argument for or against. point totals fluctuate by era (the guys coming out of the late 90's - early 00's are going to have ridiculously low totals when they retire). the number of cups largely depends on the team.
if you look at the totality of the evidence, i don't see why shanahan should get in.
but then you run into another problem: the HHOF has already let in some mediocre to good players so the argument becomes, 'well if he's in, then player x definitely gets in.' that is a difficult problem to explain away. that's why, the HHOF is probably the weakest of all the hall of fames. |
