Exhibit #300 why Howson should not be a GM in the NHL.

Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson made little progress over draft weekend towards trading right winger Rick Nash.
...

The Sharks reportedly offered a package that included forwards Ryane Clowe and Joe Pavelski, defenseman Jason Demers and a first round pick, while the Senators are rumored to have pitched left winger Nick Foligno, one of their promising goalies (Robin Lehner or Ben Bishop) and prospect center Mika Zibanejad

How do you pass on SJ's offer there.......

- ryman1566

So...CBJ could have dealt Nash for Clowe, Pavelski, Demers, and a 1st. Then, they could have moved from the #2 pick to the #4 and got the Isles entire draft.

Someone really needs to punch Howson in the face for passing on both of those.

Agreed. Pony up and get Parise. They can still get a serviceable guy like Allen for depth. The young guys like Despres and Morrow et all need to be given a shot too.
- Emperor Filonius

That is my ideal plan too.. Sign Parise, Allen and fill in the gaps around that with cheap FA's or guys in the system.

That's the key... and for me, it's also style of play. Suter is a NICE player, but the Pens need a defensive defenseman. If we were talking about Shea Weber, I'd be all over it, but $7+ mil for Suter doesn't seem like a great move in my opinion.
- rival22

Suter at 6.5-7 is good...a bit higher than his true value, but WAAAY better than what is out there, and what we currently have (aside from Letang). Not sure what you guys mean about him not being a good defensive player...have you seen him play?? He's all around VERY good.

BLEH. No way. Semin is a lazy floater. Not what this team needs.
- Emperor Filonius

Pass as well. He's a terrific talent but disappears too often.

I honestly think that he is trying to put together the worst possible team/scenario to where they beg the team to leave town, ala the Indians in 'Major League'

Hey, don't knock Craig, he is in Russia trying to sign Morozov, and Fata, and Konstantin Koltzov.

Hard to tell his role in this...I'm sure Howson has the last say. Maybe CP is trying to make Howson look bad, get fired before he can trade anybody, and make all the good deals himself...

At this rate no GM in the league will bother to even talk to Howson, seriously retarded...

Look at some of the second contracts out there now... J Staal, Lucic, M Staal, Hedman... They are all around $4 mil a year, and if the cap keeps going up, in a couple years that could be more common.

I mean, Marc Staal was a nice player his first few years, but it's not a stretch to think that Despres or Morrow could be at that level when their deals are up.

- rival22

I'm not saying it isn't possible, but but if Despres, Doumlin, Morrow, & Harrington all turn into the Dmen equivalents of J. Staal, Lucic, M Staal, and V. Hedman (ie, worth offer sheets of 1st, 2nd, & 3rd round picks) sign who you can and deal the others for a fortune.

Also, if the Cap keeps rising it may not even be an issue. Who knows?

Yeah, I guess it's a good problem to have if a few of those guys pan out to that level.

It's hard to forecast too far down the road with no CBA in place. All we can really do it speculate until Sunday, and trust Shero.

It's nice having a GM that you can trust and a core of great players. We could be a lot worse off lol.

That'd be a great 24/7 series

CBJ Owner: "I've always been a sports and Charlie Sheen fan; One day I was watching Major League on TNT...at the end of that movie, I knew my destiny was to buy an NHL franchise, run it into the ground, and be the worst sports owner that Ohio has ever seen. Its no small task, but when you have a dream you follow it to the end."

Hearing stories like this makes you appreciate that much more that we are fortunate have a competent GM let alone one of the best in the league.

And a montage of scum-bag Ohio sports figures...

LeBron James, Jim Tressel, the guy that owns the Cavs, and finally Art Modell.

I'm not a baseball expert, but a quick search of wikipedia shows that guy earned a spot in the Ohio Sports montage of shame.

I think thats the biggest thing. if the cap keeps rising how it is, then signing parise and suter, and resigining letang and orpik is so much more realistic (especially with martins contract gone). from what ive seen/heard about maata, i can see him taking a spot next year. You have to think with ALL of these D prospects plus the guys on the roster now, someone like harrington gets shopped around

At best i'd say that Despres makes it this year, maybe Doumlin and Morrow next year, and then maybe Harringon, Matta, & Pouliot the year after.

I'd give them each at least 1 year in WBS, minimum.

that leaves us with 6 NHL d-men in 3 years. what about letang, orpik, niskanen, engelland, and whoever we acquire through trades or free agency. Im just saying someone like harrington or even despres can be packaged in a deal for a real good player.

The more I think about the Staal deal, the more I like what we acquired for him:

Brandon Sutter (former 11th pick), Derrick Pouliot (8th pick) and Brian Dumoulin (one of best college D prospect according to some).

Carolina gave us a "fair" deal for letting Staal "go home"

That's pretty optimistic timelines. They will each be in WBS for 2-3 years MINIMUM...
