Its a VAST overpayment.

4 NHL players (Read, JvR, Bob, and MaB/Gus) for 1 NHL player, and potential NHL players.. while giving up 2 firsts.

That's debatable in my opinion.  The Flyers have a big need for a defenseman like him.  He's got a right handed shot (which the Flyers don't have), and hits like a freight train.  He's only 22 as well, so he's getting better and has a lot of upside.  He's always among the league leaders in hits too.  And I don't wanna trade Schenn either.  I bought his jersey during the first round.  But Bobby Ryan in Philly, playing with Giroux would be magic.  I think those two are perfect for eachother.  Who's going to play wing with Giroux over the next few seasons?   JVR?  Maybe. But maybe isn't good enough.  That's why it seems like Holmgren is making a push to land Ryan or Nash.

Schultz is right handed and Schenn looked like he struggled the second half of the year -- I'd expect Schenn + for JVR.

I don't understand how this myth has survived, considering how little Pronger has been around since 2010.

Thank god some of the armchair GM's in here can't actually make trades for the flyers. Overpayment would be an extreme polite way of describing some of these proposals.

not at 5 million compared to the rookie contract....and Carle is hot and cold.
- flyersfan51

There wont be a rookie contract... he will be a UFA, and if he is as highly touted as it sounds.. his price will likely be around 3-4 mill without ever playing an NHL game.

Hey Wideman is right handed too. But who says Schultz or Wideman would play for the Flyers? I'd love to see a combination of the Suter, Garrison, Wideman, or Schultz, as much as the next guy. Who wouldn't? I'd love for the Flyers to get two of those players. If it were up to me, I'd grab Garrison and Wideman, because I think Suter's contract is going to be insane. BUT those players can only play for one team and there is no guarantee that the Flyers can land one of the upper echelon UFA defenseman this offseason. To me the first order of business is finding a proven linemate for captain Giroux next season though.

He has a handful to choose from... JvR, Voracek, Hartnell, Read, possibly Schenn or Briere...

As for the d-man.. We dont need schenn.. We have Grossmann who is extremely physical in his own right.

What we need is a guy who can man a PP and brings a bit of offense with him. Either that or a reliable 5th-6th dman who is capable of playing 20 minutes a night if needed due to injury. Mike Weaver comes to mind.

For real. Lots of tweets all of a sudden about it. Apparently they are eating at the most visible table in the restaurant at the media hotel as well. Suggesting they want to be noticed.

i thought he had to sign an entry level deal? i don't know the rule for incentives like bonuses, but i'm pretty sure the base salary that he'll play for is already set pretty much

Trade Schenn for Bobby Ryan.  Trade vanRiemsdyk for Luke Schenn.  Then go after Suter, Garrison, Wideman or Schultz (in that order).
- TonyBazz

No thanks to both of those deals. They are both bad deals.

found this:

Since he will be signing an entry level contract this is not a case of must UFAs where they sign to the highest bidder. Instead all teams will be offering the same contract, and it is a matter of where Schultz wants to start his NHL career.

i'm not 100% sure either, but i thought that was one of the reasons this is so up in the air. it's not gonna be a bidding war because everyone has to offer him something similar, its just a matter of where he wants to play

EDIT: or exactly what was said above

thanks, deaninator
