Funny when I mentioned Iggy last season at the dead line. No one liked the idea. Said he was old. No game left.
Not singling you out kindly one. Just using your post as a platform |

If you think this team would have competed in the playoffs last year you are clearly out of your mind. - Cptmjl
Watch more games, complain less. What were they six points out several times without winning more than three in a row all season.
The last seed was a mix of teams at five hundred while the Isles were between six under or one under all season never winning more than three in a row. |

It happens all the time, the core gets good and then the support veterans come to a team to push them to the next level.
The players they need most are the ones already here, that means deHaan and Donovan play here from day one with Streit, Hamonic and MacDonald.
They need a scoring defender or one veteran who will produce ten goals on the backline. Ullstrom, Niederreiter, maybe Joensuu give them the size badly lacking at forward. There is no unwritten rule that says Cizikas, Strome or Nelson cannot come in and make this team or the other signed prospects.
No law that says Okopso cannot go back on the top line, replace Parenteau and start becoming a franchise player, same for Bailey. - NYI
Joensuu??? weve been down that road before....
in essence, your answer should have been "yes, i just expect the prospects to make it happen"....im also not as sold as everyone seems to be on donovan based on the few games hes played.... |

I would disagree with your thoughts here... 3 years is a long time. I have no issues giving up DeHaan and first round pick for a guy who is as good as Bobby Ryan and is locked up for 3 years (2 years or less I might care.. 3 is fine.).. What if year 3 He wins cup here and they have a new building.. he isn't going to leave. - niteislander
Most players on all teams leave sooner or later.
Three years (likely less) is not a long time and he is far from the final piece that could bring a cup. They could get a new building, win a cup and still leave because like Ehrhoff, Hamhuis, Martin and likely both of Nashville's defenders they all test the market.

The difference in your scenario is that the isles were soooo thin defensively and Hamonic took his opportunity and ran with it. Confidence has a lot to do with hockey players. Kinda hard for a guy like Rhett to be confident when theres 15 guys competing for a handful of spots. Once the isles started this rebuild in 2008, Rhett had to know his chances with this organization were slim to none. - kindlyrick
Yeah, I see what you're saying, but I just don't think it's that crowded at forward yet. There's time for any number of players to make an impression if they actually take advantage of their opportunities, which Rakh didn't, and apparently has no intention of doing anymore. Look at Ullstrom. Two years ago, we weren't really talking about him. We are now to some degree because he took care of business when he was called up, not because he was handed or guaranteed anything. Let's remember, this team finished 28th in the league in goals for...it's not like the players on the roster are really turning heads here. And this past season, there were so few options up front that we ended up rounding out the roster with a semi-retired tryout, who joined major flop Reasoner, and...well, whatever you call Brian Rolston. The only legit prospect that cracked the roster looked entirely overmatched in the NHL. There's a small window of opportunity now for someone to turn some heads and get on the radar. But you're not going to do it with 0 points in 7 games. In two or three years, yeah, that window probably closes as more prospects become NHL-ready. |

I cannot write I expect the prospects to make it happen, but they are here, signed and need a real opportunity, some will succeed others will fail. What I do know is anyone can be just as bad as Staios, Jurcina, Mottau and Eaton.
For all those dumping on Wishart + 5, that's a lot better than all the minus 20 defenders here.

I was talking about Ulstrom 2 years ago when he was at rookie camp. He and Cizikas basically took Rhett and Deebos spots.

Wishart's another guy who blew his window of opportunity. There was a spot there for the taking, and he lost it to a tryout. There's really not much worth stating beyond that. |

He's a free agent next summer, and you are giving away the fourth overall pick in the draft for a 34 year old free agent who's done little to help Calgary win recently or even make the playoffs.
Better stick to Europeans.

Keep selling Jarome Iginla.........and buying PA Parentheau. Let me know how that works for ya. |

Whatever you say Milbury. Fourth overall for a 34 year old free agent next year.
Maybe the kid down the block just let you beat him to get rid of you faster. |

Or the kid just didnt know how to ask to be included in the game. But as i said, keep selling Iginla and buying PA. What could go wrong?
There's a time and a place to take shots. The time is now.......the prospect pool is well stocked to take a shot at a perennial 35+ goal scoring right wing, who hits, fights, blocks shots, could mentor JT, and wear the "C". But instead, lets stick with PA, and when JT gets cross checked in the head after the whistle, we all know PA has his back..........wayyyyyyyyy back |

Bobby Ryan is a 25 year old 6' 2" 210 30 goal scorer in the NHL..singed for 3 years. I like Strome as much as all of you guys... but what are the odds Strome becomes a 30+ goal guy in NHL? - niteislander

McKenzie retweeted and said it would take two or 3 building blocks (no salary back)to get Ryan. So you would have to give up the first round pick and probably either Nelson or Strome and either Nino or deHaan. - kear20
Not a chance, way too much for us.. if we had an NHL D & were pretty good along the top 3 lines, i would be ok to trade those assets to upgrade the first line.. but we only have 3 d-men signed for next year... our first & second lines both have question marks... Would he upgrade the team.. of course.... but at what cost? Right now.. the cost is too high.

If he delivers a cup (unlikely), he can leave and go anywhere he wants afterward. It'll be well worth what we gave up in that case. |

I never listen to that crap.... all GM's say that right before they move him.. we have been talking about PK a lot... It makes too much sense. Habs could get 3rd and 4th pick. They could get cap room to go after UFA's ..etc. Isles get closer to cap floor spending less (cap hit 7.5 while making 5.5 and 4.5 next 2 years).. Gomez is not great but as a bottom 2 center I will take him if it means I get PK. - niteislander
If we were able to make this trade, throw Gomez in the #2 spot & move Nielsen back to the #3 spot.... Gomez is signed for the next 2 years, giving Strome more then enough time to develop properly to take his spot.

Nope...that's impossible around here now.
Very indicative of how politics is discussed in this country now, which is why I slowly lose interest in posting on any message boards anymore. It's the "I think I'm right mentality, and anyone who disagrees is an idiot who can suck it."
The problem with this guy is I actually threw him a bone, agreed (mostly) with his post, told him his post was pretty much spot on, and he still chose to tell me what an idiot I am. I choose to have a sense of humor about things and drop movie references, I know, I'm a HUGE detriment to this board, and a retard to boot. Should I be the guy who lectures everyone about how great things are in the Land of Oz and take every word written and analyze the poop out of it? Would I serve a bigger purpose shoving what I think is right down everyone's throats?
All I know is I usually go to bed at night with a smile on my face most nights, there are a few who I don't know if they can say the same. I try not to insult people, that's kinda my MO, but, then I'll just choose not to engage people in the future.
No loss from my point of view. - potvin05
