It's very possible Schultz will sign there. He knows Burke and he's played with Gardiner before. Without knowing the guy personally to know how he actually feels about those 2 people, it's tough to call that a real advantage, but who knows.
- micah555

For me the Shultz to Leafs link based on him knowing 2 people (or knowing one and being drafted by the other) is one of those "reaching" type assessments. It's tough to say where this guy will end up but the only thing we really do know is he didn't want to play in ANA.

It's the assumption that I don't like (not to mention the proclamation as though it was fact). It's just asinine.

Edit: Alex beat me to it...

Love how the talk about draft picks 5 through 7 has dried up real quick. No offense to our blogger, but even NHL scouts don't give two poops about those picks.

I hope that Vancouver stays away from Schultz - never played a game in the NHL and the buzz he's created has upped his value so much that everyone forgets he's an unknown quantity.

If you can think of anything better to talk about that hasn't already been discussed ad nauseum, post it in the My Hockeybuzz section and we'll all be there...seriously, I would love if there was something other than late round picks to discuss, but until the draft and UFA period hits, there probably won't be much.

128 hits in ten hours during the doldrums of summer actually seems pretty good to me.

and Schultz costs nothing in terms of assets. So why would you want them to stay away?

If they could get him into a reasonable first year contract, say between 900k and 1.5 mil, great. But if there's a 'bidding war' and you start paying a guy who hasn't played in the league more than a 1st overall pick... that cap space is important on a team that usually uses all their cap space.

The Flames signing the KHL leading scorer Cervenka to 3.75 mil will be an interesting comparison for Schultz.

Well, you're original post says:

This implies that for the most part, no one here provides interesting or useful information, and yet you provided no useful or interesting information, hence the irony. If you had simply said, Wow, great article, thanks, it would have been all good.

By here, i meant HB in general. But you're right - I should have just thanked him. It was a very interesting post.

No worries, I'm not offended. And yes, lots of drivel on the HB boards (most of my posts not excluded).

You get the feeling, the way things are going, that the team Shultz ends up with will be forking out around 3M in year 1 of the contract.

My thoughts/concerns exactly. And with D-men trending towards being projects as opposed to impact players (see Schenn,Luke) 3 mil is way too much.

There was an interesting article I posted earlier today about the upcoming CBA negotiations and the impact of the last CBA on salaries. It seems like the salary cap ceiling succeeded in reducing the highest salary earners but also achieved a counter-effect with the salary cap floor of increasing the salaries of role/bottom 6 type players as budget teams try to scramble to the cap floor.

EDIT: Nice avatar Troutback

Interesting re-tweets from Ian:

Dale the Wombat ‏@wombathockey
@canuckfan2010 Raymond on the board. Canucks would like to add Schultz and Garrison. Bryan Allen is plan B should they fail to secure either

Dale the Wombat ‏@wombathockey
@PhReAkShO Just that the offers for Luongo are still not on par with what Canucks feel hes worth. And by offers, I mean atleast 4 teams

Ian - does this guy Dale the Wombat actually have an inside track that you are aware of?

I could just sense it....isn't everyone?

Nah, from Twitter. You responded to a Twitter chain I was in, figured it was the same Alex F that posts here. I bet McMahon that if Italy won today, he'd change his avatar to the Italian flag.

You need to read up on the CBA. There's no "bidding war" because he cant get more than a ELC deal as per the CBA. So he gets the same from everyone.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the Entry Level Contract maxed out at 3.775 for 3 years - like what the flames gave KHL dude Cervenka (but for 1 year). If that figure is correct, I don't know how many teams throw that kind of cash around for this guy.

It will be similar to Cervenka. His actual salary is $925,000 per year, with a $92,500 signing bonus, and $2,850,000 in performance bonuses. There are ways around paying some of the bonuses, though.

So it is very possible Schultz could have a $3.775 million cap hit.

I still want Gillis to kick the tires on him, however. He's a very highly regarded prospect (overhyped even), and almost all very highly regarded prospects get that ELC.

If he earns it, he stays up with the big club and it's money well spent, if he doesn't, they send him to the Wolves and he doesn't count against the cap.
