For some reason, I could see Lu coming back here. I think he and Markstrom would be a better tandem than Theodore/Markstrom. I also think Theodore could go back the other way.. along with some other salary.. and be a great mentor for Schneider. He is clearly ready to take over in the crease. At the same token, we should let Clem go and bring Markstrom up to back up Luongo. Markstrom would be called upon a reasonable 15-20 games a season, and all is right with the world. Who goes back the other way? Theodore plus.... - Panthers88
How long are you planning on having Markstrom as the backup?
Because anything less than six years, and you have a problem. |

Yes, we realize that. We absolutely realize that.
Now take a quick gander at Luongo's contract, his playoff stats, and his age, and hopefully you can come to realization of your own. - Atomic Wedgie

I see 5 more years of being a top 10 goalie at a reasonable cap hit. I also see the negatives, that can easily be negated, via retirement or demotion.
Is he ideal for the Leafs...nope.
Will he get more than just a bad contract in return....absolutely. |

I think there has to be a prospect or young roster player in there too as well as a better pick: like Komisarek (to negate salary), 2nd round pick, D'Amigo. - gravyface

Just read that Ottawa might have entered the Nash sweepstakes...
I don't know what pieces are on the table.. nor does adding salary like that make sense for their youth movement they have right now but..
Michalek - Spezza - Nash

That.. is actually a good point. I hadn't thought of that. Luongo's contract is huge and eventually we would be in the same situation as the Canucks. To Toronto it is. |

That's exactly the type of deal I think works for both GM's. As Vancouver I wouldn't accept anything less and as Toronto I wouldn't offer anything more. |

If you want Schenn+MacArthur+2nd rounder for Lu, then you better throw in a guy like Bieksa or Kesler.
Doesn't mean it's fair, or it's worth it. But if you don't, it's not worth our time and assets, and im sure Burke would love to look somewhere else.
It's either take Komisarek and something like a 3rd rounder, or keep Luongo and his ridiculous contract. And have to pay 2 goalies a pretty penny.
Pick one. - jbold
Now now...no thinking logically.
You're supposed to completely ignore the 10 year contract. |

Lu would be perfect for Markstrom.
Schneids doesn't need a mentor, that's the whole point to getting rid of Lu in the first place. He's ready for the grand stage.

I soooo want him to fail if they get rid of Louongo. I mean, epic collapse, Toronto style, right out of the playoffs. |

It's quite sad that under current CBA, good players like Luongo (still top 10 goalie in the league) cannot be dealt to other teams because of their ridiculous contracts...
It would be a very nice addition to the new CBA to put in a clause of max. total contract value of around 37.5million; anything between 3 years per max caphit of around 12.5 per year, and 15 years per 2.5million per year. In this way, players, fans, GMs and all will be protected from ridiculous situations like Luongo's (and Gomez, Finger,.... etc. etc.). |

Why would bringing in a goaltender signed until 2020 be good for Markstrom.. it would only block his rise to stardom...
And then Florida would be stuck trying to trade Luongo as well...
OR.. if the amnesty clause is approve..
They allow Luongo to start for a few years and depending on his success in addition to Markstrom's growth.. they could then use the amnesty clause on Luongo a few years down the road. |

But eventually the situation here would be the same. Markstrom wants to play in the NHL. Being here as a backup would suffice for maybe three years, then we have the same situation as the Nucks.. |

I guess we will just have to wait and see.
It's also going to be interesting to see how much movement occurs before CBA talks heat up - if the owners decide to go hard core, it's probably to Vancouver's advantage to just sit and wait.
It's also to Schnieder's advantage to sit and wait - no point in signing a new contract, if everything gets rolled back by X%.
The bad news? We may be hockeybuzzing about Luongo well into September. |

Wouldn't matter as much since Florida has tons of cap room and can pay him to backup Markstrom in 3yrs if the kid is ready. Lu can get paid to sit on the bench or retire at that point...same argument has been made in Leafland. |

Luongo will be retiring just when Markstrom will be ready to take over. Give it 4-5 years and Florida will be in a great spot.

The Florida Panthers?
You know they have to give tickets away, right?
Although they may not be in Florida in 3 years, so this may not be a problem.
Seriously - Florida can't afford dead weight. |

I think this whole Luongo trade would end up being something a little more than proposed Komisarek + 2nd/3rd.....for that price, Gillis might as well just take Luongo out back and shoot him!
Expect more than that...but I doubt if Burke grabs him for assets we covet. |
