not sure what you point is here... but as a comparison - there's a guy, fairly little guy who now plays for Philly, has a CAP hit of a cool 6.5M, with 53, 68 and 49 points in his most recent three years... maybe you've heard of him Danny Briere?

what kind of money did you think Briere was going to sign for after his career year in Barfallo? what kind of money do you think a somewhat smallish, oft diving little pain the ass Derek Roy is going to sign for? Do you think he's taking less than Leino? Perhaps you shouldn't be ridiculing Grabovski's contract... but then perhaps you'd be able to see that if the buildings in Buffalo had windows

- BorjeFan4Ever

But how does Grabo stand up against Briere's playoff stats?....oh wait

So you are saying Connolly is a bargain?
- Scooby_Doo

no, but connolly only got 36 points.. if he had scored 60.. i would of been okay with the signing at 4.5mill

not a case of how much, its what situatoin that respective clubs were in when they signed their contracts... perhaps you should remember Danny Briere.

and if you'd really take Kunitz, Booth, Laich, Hudler, Ribero etc over Grabovski, then I understand why Buffalo has such dificulty managing their roster

I told you my evaluation of Phaneuf was lower than yours. Schenn for JVR (we win that trade, easy to see).

The trade then becomes Phaneuf for a late 1st and a backup goalie.

Herees the reason why this is fine by me:

1) Getting Bobrovsky means we COULDN'T bring in a guy like Luongo that would cripple our team.
2) We clear 6.5M off the cap for next year (We really need the room)
3) We get rid of our biggest defensive liability. Gunnarson saved Phaneuf's ass last year, it was all Gunnar.
4) We get a late 1st rounder. This essentially means we can package our 2nd rounder with our first rounder to move up a few positions int he draft and grab Galchenyuk. This is very important to me this year. We need this kid, he will be a staple in our line-up for many years.

.

- mfreedman

I'm gonna stop you right there..... In what blue bunny h3ll do you think you could trade a late 1st and a 2nd rounder in order to get back into the top 3 if not top 2 positions in the draft!!!!????

In that trade that I was commenting on.. you said you would trade Torontos: Phaneuf, Schenn, and 1st rounder to Philly for: JVR and Bobz.

I would take Grabo over some of them.

Let me put it this way... and I will not include any soon RFAs or whatever..

Getzlaf, Perry, Hossa, Eriksson, Franzen, Holmstrom, Carter, Brown, Plekanec, Cole, Callahan, Michalek, Hartnell, Girous, Doan, Neal, Pavelski, Clowe, and Kesler would all still be on that list without me even looking up the rest.

They all deserve 2 fold what Grabo is paid.

What's your point? I didn't see any toronto fans say he wasn't overpaid. Last time I checked those players weren't available. It's not like they picked him over them

Did you have a sleep over at U_G's house last night?? Did his mommy cut the crust off your Nuttella sandwich???

Grabo can score, makes his linemates better, Gets punished by big hits and gets back up to score overtime goals.

I would have prefered a contract at 4.75 - 5M per, but the cost of locking up your best center with the prospect of losing him to F.A. was a good gamble to take.

- billyberg10

No no no... if you're Buffalo, you take the gamble and let all of your good assets leave.... Briere, etc.... because you don't want to pay them, then put yourself into a position where you have no choice but to pay another guy 7+ million.

Perhaps Grabovski is overpaid by .750 - 1.0M. Toronto can and did decide to afford it... they kept one of there own. Or the Leafs could have allowed him to go to free agency and sign someone like Leino for an overpayment of perhaps 2.0M ... look how well that worked out.

Its crappy contracts given to guys like Leino that lead to overpayment by teams.

yeah.. i agree with that.

top line centres are getting anywhere between 6.5 and up

second line guys are going for anywhere between 4.25 to 5.75million

grabo is on the high end but one glance at the UFA centre market this year and you can see its pretty damn dry.. someone else would of given him 5.5.. which forced burke's hand

They signed long term money friendly caps because they cared about the team and not themselves... what a poopty person they are.. they easily could have gotten some team to over pay for their services like Toronto did for Grabo.

you should take a look at the big picture for once:

when were these players signed?
what was the salary cap when they were signed?
what position do they play?
are they a 2 way player or a sniper type?
how old was the player when they were signed, was it their first contract? was it there last?

Grabovski is better than every forward on Buffalo.

I agree that the market is VERY dry this off-season.. especially with Olli saying that he probably isn't going to leave Calgary.

his skills show otherwise.. he was never a great d-man.

at the age of 27 his d skills have diminished already.

Much like we have with Regehr. He is just a tough guy who can lay the body now.

- JVince117

How have they diminished youve probably watched 6 leaf games this year and the only reason you did is because they played the sabres, he's our best defenseman by far the reason his 2nd half wasnt so good is he was already worn down from the firt half. Wilson was practically playing him 30 minutes a game in regulation alone he was way to overplayed and worn down after the all star break.

Underlined are players on rookie contracts
Italicized are players worse than him
Bolded& Underlined are people who circumvented the cap
