A contender? Absolutely not. I think it makes them a bottom rung playoff team, 6-8 seed. You have so many unknowns in your proposed lineup. Nobody knows what you're going to get out of Strome (if he even makes the team) or if PAP actually comes back or what Cizikas and Ullstrom will even bring to the table if they even make the team. you don't know what Reese, de Haan or Donovan could give you over 82 games.

One thing that everyone should have been able to see from these playoffs is that depth is critical. You have to be able to run four lines and 3 pairs of "D" out all game and have them all contribute at both ends of the ice. I don't think we've seen enough from guys like Bailey, KO, Nielsen, etc. to depend on them for productivity when it counts.

- Jethro09

This year an 8 seed won the cup against a 6 seed.

2 years ago the Flyers were a 7th seed (tied for 8th with 88 points .. 1 point above the 9 seed Rangers).. they went to finals against the Blackhawks.

How are they not being managed well when all the players here desperately want to stay and make that clear all the time? No one forced Tavares, Grabner, Okposo to take backloaded money, no one forced Nielsen or Nabokov to return.

They work here, why would they want any money if things were as bad as you claim?

So giving Tavares 36 million dollars early is cutting corners, or what those other players got or all the players signed through the system. Three of this teams picks from last summers draft were all signed early so how is that cutting corners.

Seems the players here want to be here very much and know they are getting close to winning.

The Coliseum at age 40 is a joke? What does that make 1968 Msg or the Igloo or all those buildings open for 60-70 years? Oh that's right their media grew up fans of those dumps and we have Dolan's Newsday and Dolan's Msg with angry former media relations coordinator and Brooks, Botte cheap shots from afar.

Red Fisher calls the Montreal Forum a dump, the team calls up the Gazette and he's gone 25 years earlier along with the Habs ad money they pay the paper.

If you were an NHL player you would come here and discover what Nabokov did, even with three prospect goalies and DiPietro you happily signed on.

- NYI

Love the reference to the media as the reason people think the Coliseum is a "joke" as you put it (a "dump" more accurately). Yeah, the media are the reason why pieces of concrete fell from the ceiling years ago (must have been Larry Brooks climbing around the ceiling with a hammer and chisel). The media are why there is asbestos issues in the building now. The media are why some of the seat backs in the arena are broken and there are leaks in parts of the roof.

Keep in mind, your boy Charles Wang himself hates the arena. He hates it so much he wants a new place and won't sign a lease for the team to play at NVMC past 2015. But yes, its all the media's fault that the arena has a bad perception.

Next thing you'll be telling us is that RDP is actually better than Jonathan Quick and its the media's fault that there's a negative perception of RDP.

They've been awarding a Stanley Cup for over a century. Since the playoffs expanded to 16 teams, how many bottom seeds have won it? We know LA. Who else? How many 6-8 seeds have made it to the finals in that time?

Heck, Garth Snow said it's a big reason he can't sign FAs. If anyone has perpetuated the idea that the Coliseum is a dump/joke, it's been the Islanders.

Edmonton is one (Peca)
Flyers are 2..
We had a 6 play the 8 this year..
Edit: that was off the top of my head.. looking a bit now
in 2003 Jersey beat the Ducks who were the 7th seed.
in 2004 Tampa beat Calgary who was the 6th seed.
1999- Buffalo was the 7th seed made it to the finals.
1996 Devs were the 5 seed when they won
1993 two 5 seeds played for the cup.

I'm certainly not. I'm just concerned that in what could be Poulin's most important pro season to date, they may be lacking in the goalie coach department.

If you read my post this place appeals to certain players cause there is no pressure to win here.
- kasperrko

I don't understand how you can make such a statement unless you play on the team and were told there is no pressure to win here by management.

Tavares I am happy he signed. I think the whole fan based would have unted Wang and Snow down to have him sign so they were goign to give him anything he wants, but they have yet to surround him with much talent.

- kasperrko

They gave him a left wing who scored 30 goals three years in a row, they started with Okposo as his right wing his first year and as a top ten pick that's where he belonged.

Grabner signing a huge contract is because no one else wanted him.

- kasperrko

So no one would want a 35 goal player, who easily could have had fifty who had a non-scoring center in Nielsen and injured Okposo when he broke out?

What would you do? Okposo signed as well to get back to his form and I bet you anything if he was an elite player he would not have signed here long term.

- kasperrko

He could get back to his forum with any contract, who says he's not an elite player because he sure showed those signs before his shoulder injury.

This team has no direction. If Wang can not open up his pocket book for talent on this team then this team is goin no where. There are free agents to be had every year out there but we sign the Jon Sims and REasoners of the world. Why cause they are cheap.

- kasperrko

Did you look at the free agent market the last few summers? The Isles tried with Ehrhoff and a few others, the front-loaded players they cannot pay that much up front, the rest are retreads unless you want to give Torres and Nystrom a million to move to their next location.

What direction do they not have? They have some excellent young players on both offense and defense and a very strong prospect base with a lot of depth in the system.

Jon Sim signed here at a different time after back to back 17 goal seasons and got hurt his second game. Reasoner was signed to be a fourth line center after a thirteen goal season and got hurt before camp ended.

Oh and buddy you dont know me I would not play anywhere near Ricky D. He is nothing but an atrocity. Every eyar he tells us how great he feels and then he blows a tire. He should be out of hockey and sitting at home watching like he does every year but with out pay. It is funny I am not the only guy who would probably not play for the ISlanders. Ask the hundreds of NHL talent out there who are free agent every year why they chose not to play with the Islanders.

- kasperrko

How do you know what players would not play for the Isles if the contracts were even and not front-loaded. Are you an NHL player or just read some SI/Espn garbage about what players some teams want to play for once a year?

All those free agents also left another team.

What's an atrocity is someone who was an all-star franchise goaltender went for surgery on his knee and it got worse twice and did not have the surgery to ruin his career. Since then he had a 50 game year which would have been seventy if not for Johnson's elbow pad to his eye and last year where he had a hernia.

Coincidence? I think not. This team is a joke and well you are fitting right in with the joke cause you for some deranged reason reason belive this team is managed well and that they are awesome and that they are the best. I aprreciate your love and comapssion but open your eyes this team has not been relevant since the early 90's and they are not close now either.

- kasperrko

What the heck is relevance, the Devils made the finals and got two or three articles per paper in baseball city USA. The Rangers were in first place all winter and got zero NYC backpages and the Yankee rumors of selling kicked them off the back and front pages for their semi-final home playoff game.

What's relevant in Toronto for hockey when the team has not won since 1967 or all the teams that never have won a thing?

No, what's a joke is you making claims about a lockerroom or an organization you are not part of and neither am I. The players working there daily from September to April, influence my views and that is what we should go by because it's their careers, their chance at winning and their financial future.

They know, we don't, they signed on with enthusiasm.

That and how the individuals perform who management brings in is the only thing that influences me.

From Elliot Friedman, yesterday: It doesn't sound like the Islanders are interested in re-signing Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau. Sometimes, people look at guys like him and say, "He's only getting points because he's playing with John Tavares." While that may be true, it's always a gamble the next guy has the same chemistry with your star. Or that Parenteau will go somewhere else and get 67 points with a different star.

So that's why the Lighthouse was only for a renovation? He hates the place so much he's been spending for a decade as a tenant to renovate his landlords house. You cannot rewrite the history to deflect from what's happened.

You must have also missed the fine print from Garth Snow a few years ago, he said it was ONE reason he had problems in free agency at a time he was also selling a renovated Coliseum with the Lighthouse.

The Coliseum is open, the Garden was closed for falling debris and asbestos in 2010.

You want to tell us the dumpy Garden, the Igloo, the Aud, Chicago Stadium, Boston Garden, Montreal Forum, Maple Leaf gardens far older are not dumps and only the Coliseum is I tell you those writers and publications are in the business of selling their teams so the paper can make ad money. We have Dolan owning newsday and a lot of Canadian media that always resented the Isles unmatched success.

The media in Canada may criticize the Leafs, but they love the Leafs. Win or lose a lot of media love to hate the New York Islanders.

This may be the most absurd thing I have read to date. To me Kasper.. And I really like u bro.. this is beyond insane.

No one wanted Grabner last summer? He just scored 34 goals as a rookie. He was up for the Calder trophy and was the fastest guy in the NHL. You think he signed as an RFA with the Isles b/c NOONE WANTED HIM??!! this honestly shows me u have no grip on reality when it comes to the Islanders. You just like to scream they suk and everything about them suk and no one can tell u other wise.

There is not a team in the NHL who would not have wanted Grabner when he signed that contract.. none. Even your beloved Pens and Rangers would have taken him in a heart beat.

If Okposo started there bcs he was top ten what happened with Nino?

Come on with the allstar reference, "franchise goaltender" , do we really have to get into why he was there

How is how many articles the Devils and Rangers get as compared to baseball have to do with anything? We are talking hockey which notoriously gets stiffed in NY newspapers. How many pages do the Islanders get?
