Personally I do not agree with going out with the same defensive core again.
You are playing with big fire as Kimmo is aging and what happen if he goes down? I do not for one second believe there is one d-man on the team that can be that #1.
Its all about how the players combine. I believe paying Carle 5 million will not allow the team to get that true #1 they need.
Push hard after Suter.
There is all this talk about finding a replacement for Kimmo when his contract is done next season. The only player who can even come close to being a #1 is Edler who is UFA next season. The Canucks are not going to let him go.
I suppose they could deal Meszaros. However you do that and you lose even more grit on the back end, where its desperately lacking already. Again, its all about the combination.
I'd also be pushing hard for Subban with JVR. - flyer_nutter
Your right there is no #1 currently. But re-signing Carle will not prevent the Flyers from getting a #1 defenseman if it becomes available. And to be clear, Suter is not a #1.

The money tied up in Carle's contract would. They could trade him but there are risks with that too.
Aside from Kimmo, Suter is closer to being a #1 than anything the Flyers currently have.
If #44 goes down, things will get really scary, especially in the playoffs against the top teams.
Now if #44 retires next season then it gets even scarier. If the number of quality of d-men available this off-season seems low, next off-season is even worse.

You'd be getting a bona fide top pairing NHL defenseman that can play in all situations. He's not Weber, but he's at the next level down. And would be well worth JVR in my opinion. - MJL
The reason why most posters here would make that move? Because it heavily handed in our favor.
Looking at it from the Hawk's perspective, a top pairing d-man just entering his prime for a yet to be proven power forward? I can't believe they'd even consider it.

I disagree. Coburn can be beast - he just needs to be more consistent. - Daman
That is the big problem with the "big 3" on the back end.
Carle, Mez and Coburn are inconsistent as hell. You always know one of them will have a dreadful night.
They have been here for some time and the story is known.
Consistency is a huge factor separating the true 1st pairing guys from guys better suited to a 2nd pairing role.
With Pronger done, and Kimmo's body being held together by super glue they need the big horse and they need it now. I'd be all for keeping Carle and dealing Mez, however Suter isn't exactly a physical player and you can't be losing more grit on the back end by dealing Mez.

Signing Suter would be far worse in terms of preventing the Flyers from getting a true #1 then Carle would. And signing Suter isn't go to make that much of a bigger difference with Timonen going down then would signing Carle. Suter is an upgrade over Carle in a few areas. But not that much to make that much of a difference.

If you have a choice to start your team off with Suter or Carle, you pick one over the other every single time.
Now the question becomes is the 2 extra million worth it. In terms of the Flyers need for another top pairing d-man, due to the inconsistency of the other d-men and the questionability of #44's durability, I believe you slap his ass, and sign the cheque.
It comes down to whether I believe this current defensive group can win the cup. I do not. I also don't think bringing in a guy like Garrison or Enstrom improves them enough.

I don't believe that Suter is worth the extra cost. Enstrom is every bit as good as Suter is. He's a good player that I'd love to have. But not at what I think it's going to cost. I'd rather sign Carle, and keep some options open for the future..

me too. can't see the Hawks parting with Seabrooke for a player that is not an established star, or at least one that has no question marks left about whether or not he can stay healthy and reach his potential.

silly animated gif. no sound. just a llama (i think) walking in circles with the caption "fabulous". I thought it was funny at the time, but having to explain it like this it seems decidedly less so.

Enstrom is nowhere near as good as Suter.
Even watching Suter in the playoffs and Nashville being tossed by Phoenix he is still better than Enstrom who I get to see lots of living in Winnipeg.
You sign Carle and pray Kimmo doesnt get hurt and find that miracle savior to be your dominant #1 next season?
Or have a d-core run by a bunch of guys best suited to a secondary role.
Makes the peanuts shiver.
If am a pittsburgh or new york fan I know which Flyer team I'd worry about more. The one with Suter compared to the one with Carle.

Enstrom is absolutely in the same class of player as Suter is. Without a doubt. In your plan your looking for Suter to be the savior. You'd be disappointed. Suter would help on the PP, and add a threat there. But regardless if Timonen went down, the same issue would be there.
