Guys we are talking about the same guy who drafted Andrew Peters 34th (137 picks before Datsyuk) so im alarmed he didnt trade up.

Seems that with the draft being pretty weak the pick trade is the route I like.

Im sure Detroit does a very nice job developing players but you cant develop the raw skill that each of them has. Fact is when they were drafted the scouting in Europe was limited. If every team devoted resources to Europe the way they do now Datsyuk and Zetterberg would have been no worse than 2nd round picks.

Holland even admitted that they were long shots, but that's the type of guys they target late. Guys who have superstar talent, but that will get passed because the odds of them making it just aren't high. One of those guys was like 130lbs when drafted, who the hell would've thought to take a 130lb guy.

Andersson is pretty well known as the be-all and end-all of European scouting now. It's gotten to the point that Detroit gave him his own staff and put him in charge of European Scouting, both pro and amateur. Most European scouts just work under the Director of Amateur Scouting.

Tommie Bergmann is another good European scout-- Tomas Kaberle, Viktor Stalberg, Carl Gunnarsson, etc. all in the 6th round or later.

I think you would be a little schoked if you looked at the numbers of the amount of players who play longer than 6 seasons in the NHL. Plus take out the strike year plus the change in the game after the strike

Seems like the Sabres had some good European influence during the 90's then once the 2000's hit seems like they just stopped.
