I agree. I think Paul Martin is getting a bad reputation for poor play over a few week span (likely due to injury).

They have a solid defensive corps in: Martin, Michalek, Orpik, Letang, Niskanen, Engelland, Despres and Morrow.

They need help on the wing.

- bradleyc4

I disagree... I think Martin is not who they thought they were getting when they signed him.. On top of it, he makes Carle look like Scott Stevens.

Has he been terrible, no.. but he hasnt been that 2 way force they thought he would be IMO.

EDIT: Tots forgot about Niskanen.. if they resign him (RFA) they really will be kinda stacked on D.

I think Niskanen is highly underrated.

(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $69,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,851,944; BONUSES: $3,555,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster):$4,148,056 (with bonus cushion) $7,703,056

So basically.. I signed Carle at 4.8 mil, Czechie at 3.25, Bourdon at 1.0, demoted Shelley, and LTIR'd (for all intents and purposes) Pronger.

Its gonna be tough to really add a big name on defense without making a trade.

- jak521

For the in Season Cap, with Pronger on LTIR they would have over 8M in Cap space to play with, based on that.

Pronger is on LTIR correct? What does that do for you?

Edit: I'm wrong there. You didn't include Pronger so he would have to be added to that total first. I didn't see that at first.

Gonchar is washed up, hes done.

If I were the Flyers I try Myers in Buffalo, because they have an abundance of dmen. Start with JVR+ mid level prospect for him.

Jak you also forgot to lower Schenns cap hit. As long as he doesnt play 20-25 mins 1st game, his cap hit goes down to 1.75

Just sign garrison. They should have room for that, and that's all they need. I think you can add 1.5 mil of space in there for schenns cap hit.

Schenn has to play a game, and miss a game first before the Cap hit for him would be adjusted. His Cap hit going into the Season would be $3,110,000 without a bonus cushion for the Season. Schenn will count for $2,773,783 on the Cap for the off Season Cap

Would it be a silly idea to trade Bob for a young Dman and sign a vet back up like Biron?

Is it silly to hope Jagr comes back a little cheaper because I'm not seeing much other scoring options to replace him.

No that wouldnt be a silly idea, but Biron seems to be perfectly happy with the situation he is in up in NY.

Also, I think it will be tough to get a NHL quality young D-man for Bob.

i doubt Jagr will take a discount...he showed he can still play...
he will only return if he knows and is comfortable with his role. if not he will sign elsewhere...

There's no way Buffalo would give up Myers with the asking price starting at JVR. Any move consisting of Myers would have to include Coots, Schenn, Read +.

With the way that Martin has played, you almost have to improve within the top 4.
- jak521

I agree, Martin has been terrible. However, Despres played 18 games at the NHL level and from what I have seen of him it was inexplicable why he did not receive more time there. I suspect he will be called up and receive a spot on the starting roster while limiting Martin's ATOI. This is essentially the same response the Penguins had when Martin's play suffered at the beginning of the year, allowing Niskanen a spot in our Top 4 and playing Martin as a 5/6 defender.

JvR is more valuable than Read, and I dont know if I am reading this wrong, but are you say Coots, Schenn, Read + or Coots +, Schenn+, Read +?

The latter.

And JVR might be more valuable, but with the price tag he has and the injury-riddled season he just had, I'm not too sure there would be many teams willing to add him.

With that offer, it had better be S. Weber...not Myers.

EDIT: I see your clarification.

Since he'd have to dress in all 82 games AND average 25-plus minutes of ice time per game for the entire year, the in-season cap hit will drop quickly even w/o the bonus cushion.
