Can Pitt pull of having all of their big 5 (Sid, Malkin, Staal, Letang, Fleury) under the salary cap in the long term and still have a complete team?

Doubt it... Crosby will be getting 10 mill a year in his new contract.

It will be loaded with bonuses like Brad Richard's deal.

Its not really that crazy... He's young and the market may dictate he earns that much.

Guys like Hemsky, Connolly, Grabo getting 5+.... who's to say Staal couldnt get 7.

- robin_steele264

Yeah, salaries are like NHL clubs' stupidity, always increasing....just because top paid guys got 7 or 8 a few years ago doesn't mean Staal won't get that a few years later.

If Staal gets 6M...it will be on a VERY long contract that will bring him to retirement. Guaranteed money.

It is that crazy because the Penguins won't let him go to open market. Furthermore, even if he did, he scores as much as the guys you listed meaning that's where he's going to end up. Even if he gets an extra million for being one of the best defensive forwards, he's still in the 6 million dollar range. Just like Toews.

He might get a 7 million dollar salary once or twice but his cap hit won't be anywhere near that. And the cap hit is what matters which is exactly why the Penguins can and will fit him.

Salary and cap hit are two different things. And the only one that matters is the cap hit. Crosby might have a 10 million dollar salary but the cap hit will be lower.

Imagine what Sid's insurance premiums must look like, a whole hell of a lot of salary, sales, and sponsorship is riding on that squash

Not really. Seguin, at the same age, has outperformed him at every level. He's younger, cheaper, plays center and is just a better all around player. When Seguin is 24/25, you will understand. Plus, two more picks on top of that.
- Unholy_Goalie

it's not that I don't understand, I'll just wait till he's 24/25 before I choose which side of the fence I'm on.

It's pretty obvious. If you were the Penguins and you had to sign Crosby, would you really eat a 10 million dollar per year cap hit and risk having to trade away other players? Hell no. They're going to lock up their core players, to reasonable deals and keep the cap hits as low as they can.

29 goals, 38 assists, 67 points and +34, All-Star, Cup winner by age 19/20.

You need to wait another four or five years to see it?

Seems obvious that the best player in the world should get paid the most.

Newfoundland.

They keep it a secret from Labrador.

Because they're too busy with the canine industry.

Plenty of them there now. How did no one see this coming, unlimited game and no predators, been a long time coming. Best they wipe those wolfyotes out, and soon.

How much will Staal command in a new contract?

6-7 mill?

- robin_steele264

Probably something around 5.

And for the 10th time, cap hit and salary are two different things.

Crosby, in his time with the Penguins, has saved their franchise. Without him, they have no Cup, no fans, no revenue, no arena. Nothing. It's a pretty safe bet that he, much like Lemieux before him, will retire a Penguin. That means a 10 or 12 year deal. That also means they can control the cap hit.

14 million for 5 years.
8 million for 5 years.
4 million for 5 years.

8.66 million dollar per year cap hit. 130 million dollars total.

I'm not sure what their rules are on how much the annual contract is allowed to drop at the end of the deal but just roughly off the top of my head, they give him his money and get their desired cap hit. He's 25 and they sign him until he's 40.
