Still better off with Seguin. And the two other picks.

Gardiner Kadri

Or Gardiner + Colburne

I think that might do it or toss in a 2end with it

I really want to hold onto Gardiner, unless it was part of a deal for a 1st line centre....can't remember the last time we developed our own star prospect which he could be...especially in a cap world you want to have some guys who are really good but cheap

Don't get me wrong I'd trade a significant prospect and pick for Staal but Gardiner I want to see us stick with and see what happens

So Obama, an Arab and Oprah walk into a bar. Oprah eats the entire salad bar, Obama complains about her overspending, promises cut backs and the americans hate him for it, and the arab throws rocks at them both, makes crude jokes, and misses out on his salad with oil and vinegar cause Oprah had a not so fresh moment.
- shinebox

It must have been very frustrating for Oprah. I feel badly for a woman who feels not as fresh as she could be and therefore can't stop itching her snatch and getting fish all under her nails and stuff.

Burke has to do whatever it takes to get staal
- Sherratt0204

which staal? you must be specific with that last name as there are plenty of them.

i hope burke keeps to his word this time around and makes some good hockey trades. i think this year he wouldn't hesitate to make the kadri kulemin for richards deal like he did last year. hes made it known he doesnt want old soon to be retired vet guys but young guys that can help, or young vets. i also dont want to see him run through our prospects just to make trades, only make smart trades which are fair both ways (usually hard to do but its possible). not many of our guys have value right now so burke will probably target guys who didn't have a great year last year a la chris stewart, paul statsny, andrew ladd (doubtful though), steve ott, devin setoguchi, alex burmistrov and james van riemsdyk just to name a few. they all had not that great regular seasons so i'm sure the asking price shouldn't be too high.

If you're talking about Jordan Staal. Then no.

There's no point in trading that for him. We already have a 2nd line center.

Pittsburgh would laugh at that offer. Very one-sided for the Leafs.

How much will Staal command in a new contract?

6-7 mill?

Not really. Seguin, at the same age, has outperformed him at every level. He's younger, cheaper, plays center and is just a better all around player. When Seguin is 24/25, you will understand. Plus, two more picks on top of that.

5-6 mil probably, no way he deserves 7 and no way he stays at 4.

Absolutely not.

He will get somewhere between what Mike Richards and Jonathan Toews make which is 5.75 to 6.3 million per year. And the cap hit might be lower depending on how long he is signed for. I'd say his salary is as high as 6 million a year and his cap hit is as low as 5 million a year. The Penguins can and will fit him.

Oprah, fat chicks can suck a tennis ball through a tennis racket, and five grand is five grand. Plus saying you nailed Oprah really is more badass than saying you nailed Kim Kardashian.

That might be one of the most rational, sense-making thoughts I've ever read on this site.

yea on a long term deal with a cap hit of 5-6 mil just like brad richards last year

edit: richards cap hit is 6.67 but still, long term staals cap hit should be 5-6 mil

There are only 29 players in the NHL with a 7 million dollar or more annual salary. Go up and down the list and you'll find very few comparable players. Only 18 players with a 7+ million dollar cap hit.

Like I said, Mike Richards makes 6.6 million in salary but his cap hit is 5.75 million per year. That's the type of deal that Staal will get.

Pitts won't let him hit the market, he will get resigned after the next CBA is signed.

Thats kinda what I thought, but I read today they he could expect 7 mill on the open market.

They would be idiots to let him become a UFA. At worst, they trade him for a boatload of talent. He's an incredibly versatile player and has been a proven part of a winning equation.

The only thing I've seen dumber than that was a guy who tried to compare Gagner to Staal.

Can Pitt pull of having all of their big 5 (Sid, Malkin, Staal, Letang, Fleury) under the salary cap in the long term and still have a complete team?

Its not really that crazy... He's young and the market may dictate he earns that much.

Guys like Hemsky, Connolly, Grabo getting 5+.... who's to say Staal couldnt get 7.
