You know, I think it's a case of familiarity breeding contempt. I started watching CBC because I got tired of NBC's broadcasts. I don't hate NBC, but still, I liked the different view. Plus, CBC's in game presentation is better, or at least it was until NBC greatly updated it after the New Year. It also sounds like CBC's drastic budget cuts are affecting the product as well. - buffalofan19
The problem is we get TSN, which has some of the best Play-by-play guys around. They have smart ex-players and then they have some of the best Insiders. CBC just gets what TSN doesn't want. |

Hypothetically, hossa is a ufa after this season what would he get? - Lahey
Aren't all fines and lost salary because of suspensions pooled into a fund that pays ex NHL players who have their careers shortened because of injury? Mainly because most NHL players barely have their high school diploma and have a hard time functioning in the normal economy. |

What's awesome is a guy like George Parros has a degree from Harvard. Watch him in an interview. He's extremely sharp. |

So True... I mean I would say that Sportsnet is only a couple notches above CBC... I mean Brophy sux, Maclean - the TSN lineup is pretty damn solid - except for Ferraro- he could be upgraded... and McGuire moving on is not a loss either for TSN... CBC just keeps the same ones around for (frank)ing ever... Cherry is the only one I would consider keeping and that is variable due to his continuum of foot in mouth disease at times....lol... |

I think you will find the majority of NHL players can more than function in life after Hockey. The Junior teams require them to keep their grades I believe. Furthermore hockey players come from mostly affluent families, who can afford to put their kids through the game. Obviously not every upper middle class family is intelligent and my statement is a generalization, however you would be surprised how intelligent most are. Even if they are dumb as a post, opportunities arise for them that do not for us normies.
In short they're more than able to function. |

One more thing, I do know this, I'm not assuming. The Junior guys still get report cards, and they still have to show their parents/billets just like any other kid. Most of them aren't going to make it, the parents will make sure they are prepared for the outside world if the dream dies. |

But what about the serious first part of my statement? Is that poop real? I heard it from someone and just repeated it here. |

I believe the funds go to an emergency fund for such purposes, yes. It also likely pays for rehab programs and any treatment players may need. |

I don't always agree with Burke, but what he is saying here makes a lot of sense. Sometimes we just need to step back.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=393538
Burke told USA Today's Kevin Allen on Wednesday that the media's focus on the incidents that have happened on the ice are taking away from the 'third-round intensity' and drama of the first-round of the postseason.
"This is like people complaining about the rain at Woodstock," Burke told USA Today. "Yes, there was lots of mud, but it was the greatest music gathering in history."
"I hope we continue to nail the people who are crossing the line," Burke told USA Today. "But this is a small number of incidents, and it's unfortunate that non-hockey media is focusing on that. But what I see is great hockey. It's awesome."
"Nine times of 10 when players cross the line, it's emotional," Burke explained to USA Today. "It's not cognitive. (Washington's Nicklas) Backstrom didn't say the other night, I'm going to go in and cross-check this guy. Aaron Asham didn't say to himself. I'm going to cross-check Brayden Schenn in the throat. It's adrenaline. It's reaction."
Burke also has no issue with the work Shanahan has done assessing incidents and handing out his decisions. "You can't make people happy, so just do the job," Burke said. "And I think Brendan is doing that. It's impossible for fans to be rationale at this time of year. It's impossible for Detroit fans not to be outraged when Shea Weber wasn't suspended (for slamming Henrik Zetterberg's head into the glass). But I don't think he should have been." |

I was actually going to use Hall as an example of maaaaaybe being a guy who would require assistance. Heard through the grapevine with a buddy of mine who worked for the Spits that; Hall showed up late for class once and sat down. After a few moments the teacher called him up to do a problem on the board. He stood up, walked up front and signed his name in chalk on the board and walked out.
He is an exception hahaha

My thoughts exactly. For me this has been the best playoffs that I can remember and it's in 3-4 games in. I am not even exaggerating when I say, if they ended tomorrow they'd be the best in memory, for me anyways. It has nothing to do with the suspensions and the dubious acts, rather the intensity and the finishes. Lots of hard hockey being played. Stanley Cup seems to be anybodies at this point and that is what intrigues me... save the Pens and Nucks of course.

I honestly think someone will get paralyzed or killed before they do anything major. NHL isn't terribly proactive. Far more reactionary. I mean, the Moore/Bertuzzi incident kind of rattled some cages but people have already kind of forgotten about it. Some idiots blamed Moore in the first place. Just shows the mentality that exists amongst a lot of hockey fans, and why it will take something tragic for it to change. - GuyLaDouche
+1.
Not until a player is a veggie sandwich with the alarm bells go off; that followed by a major lawsuit.
I'll also echo some of the statements on here by some regarding the NHLPA. If they wanted something to change -- they would.
Start with the bloody pads. Nope. They like the armor. Who wouldn't right?
It all gets pretty confusing as these talking points continue to circulate.
Who knows...change too much and you have the SEL. I wonder if that would sell.

Frankly I've enjoyed Boston Washington more...it's embarrassing to watch Pittsburgh try to play a Philly game - no one does it like Philly, and they keep getting exposed. I suppose the high scoring is cool though. Something to get used to when the Oilers make the playoffs with most goals for AND against - Morris
Another thing to get used to when the Oilers make the playoffs is the stretcher coming out. Our team is not built to play Ball. |

CBC's quality of hockey broadcast has been dropping steadily for... 5 years? More? TSN gets the big money talent, CBC is currently getting the second best and soon will be third or fourth. While politicians are claiming we can't afford OAS, nobody is going to want to give CBC, say, 100 million tax dollars so they can do better hockey games. |
