good point. pretty sure tambo will just take whoever burkie tells him to take.

Burkie's strategy to build a wining team:

plan A: Win Sidney Crosby lottery

plan B: get Phil Kessel.

- dt99999

If Burke didn't already burn his bridges with Edmonton, he did today. He went ape on how the Penguins "won a lottery" and pretty much damned it to hell. The Oilers won the lottery too. Burke just can't get anything going.

Crosby for a conditional 7th.

I highly doubt they consider it though.

Is Catenacci still on your list of males you love? That was an easy call for the next great player right Lord of Hockey? I think he's going to win MVP when he gets his shot at NHL hockey. Pathetic that you thought you were brilliant for finding this "diamond in the rough". He was the OHLs first overall pick, but even your brilliant scouting abilities couldn't predict his downfall.

All we had to do was lose 3 more games and we would of landed #1...

Edm picking first isn't a good thing... we were hoping they pick a d man... now they get Yakupov and CBJ will take Grigs and MTL with take Gally and NYI will land Forsberg and we are stuck with d men.

Gally and Grigs need to be available for MTL to ensure we land a top fwd.

Edmonton is soon to become Pits 2.0. The kids they have and watch out when their young dmen mature and come into the big show. Now they need Dubs to get better in net and having Bullin wall def helps. My Toronto just stinks, even the hockey gods don't want us to win the lotto!

I thought doing it properly would mean they'd already be contending with the previous 2 1st overall picks. poop, you mean to say it will take 3 top picks? How will a team pull that off?

what about the years before crosby? they were no where near a 100pt team. lemieux barely spent anything to keep that team functional, let alone competitive.

there's plenty to dump on BB for, but not following the 'PIT model' isn't. in fact, it's a myth, it only works if you're team drafts a generational talent (crosby, lindros, etc), not just a pretty good one (bobby ryan, john tavares).

the biggest problem is BB had a chance to draft seguin and hamilton, and instead traded those high end picks for kessel. kessel is the right player, AT THE WRONG TIME!

- coach

You're contradicting yourself. Seguin was the right player at the right time. And where could Burke have got him? Yep, in the draft.

Ok so now that EDM has the top pick, it's safe to say that they will almost be forced to take it.

Which is different from what could have hypothetically happened had they snagged second, which would have made snagging a Dman much more rational. However, no Dman is close to being considered the top pick, so it will be interesting to see what they do.

I'd like to think that they could perhaps use the first in a trade, but there aren't many established Dmen out there who are available and worth a first.

So here is what I would consider to be the most likely top 5:

EDM - Yakupov
CBJ - Grigorenko/Galyenchuk
MTL - Galyenchuk/ Grigorenko
NYI - Murray/Dumba
Tor - Forsberg/Galyenchuk(It's whichever of those two are available)

I have a feeling Grigs goes before Galy, and that Galy will probably go before Forsberg.

Craig Button's take on the top 14 was reflective of what a moron he is.

He has CBJ drafting Murray 2nd overall, which doesn't make sense considering they got Jack Johnson at the deadline, and will need help putting the puck in the net.

He also has NYI going after Forsberg at centre when they themselves need a defenceman, and probably aren't in urgent need of another centre after getting Ryan Strome last year

well in all fairness, it's only been successful for one franchise. two if you count chicago.

i'm not opposed to it, i'd be happy to see some patience for once... but history has proven there's a lot of other ways to successfully win championships without tanking a decade through the draft.

LA and the isles have been really good at it to.

Nah. He's just gotta rent a barn and 'work things out' with the Oiler brass. 'Cause that approach works in management in 2012.
