They didn't need to waste a draft pick on him, he's on the team anyway!
That being said, I don't disagree that he could or should have been considered for the Masterton trophy.
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.
And now, the trophy is more a "comeback player of the year award". |

Also, what Tremblay doesn't say is that it was Timmins who invited Desharnais to the development camp, and he was the one who convinced Gainey to sign him to a pro contract.
