The length of the shift had zero to do with the play. I absolutely want to see hits like that removed from the game.
- MJL

If your talking purely the mechanics of the hit. I guess the shift had nothing to do with it.....but through Voracek's own words, clearly it had some effect on why he put himself in that position. If it didn't he wouldn't have mentioned it.

"I’ve got to be aware that Kronwall is standing there at the blue line. It was the end of my shift and I look up and he’s standing at the blue line and I’m focusing on the puck and he’s very good at it.

I was kind of naïve to think he was going to back up"

You are correct. The one hit on Crosby was like a running into each other type hit if I remember correctly. Or did they throw out an elbow why skating by? I could be wrong...

The initial hit by Steckel(IIRC it was David Steckel) was just a simple collision, the hit from Hedman was a hit from behind.

I can honestly say I dont remember the Hedman hit. I just wish there was a way to get rid of the "gray" area in Rule 48.

That's why it's so difficult. I think that the hit on Voracek falls into the mitigating circumstances that give room under rule 48. I'm support clearing the gray, but at the same time, does totally outlawing head contact end up killing hitting altogether?

I think Voracek's comments kind of say it all-guys have to be aware of what is going on around them and who is out there. That said, guys like Kronwall could be more respectful.

I hate it. I don't like the hit, but under the existing rules, it is legal.

Rule 48 states exactly why it's illegal

Well, the volume of posting overall is also very low. The correlation of rare complaining to rare general posting doesn't speak well to us "meaningful conversationalists"

He's not saying it was a factor. All he's saying is that it was later in his shift.

He was at the very end of a shift that lasted two minutes and thirty-four seconds. It wasn't the sole reason he put himself in that position - but it certainly contributed. The way the play developed (assuming that Kronwall was going to make the hit regardless) he was doomed from the start.

just as you probably know, Timonen and Mesz will not play tomorrow, Jagr won't either. the guy who may or may not have been hit may or may not play.

I personally don't see how it was a factor in my opinion.
