I'm so sad that you're got very little to be happy about this season, that this is your reason to smile.

We get it, you would prefer Phaneuf over Karlsson.

Hummmm, a little perspective here............

You're correct, Karlsson leads all defence-men with 103 giveaways, seven more than Niklas Hjalmarsson who has 96.

However Karlsson also has 63 takeaways, second among all defence-men, way more than Hjalmarsson's 19.

So if you subtract the takeaways from the giveaways, it might seem that Hjalmarsson is more of a defensive liability than Karlsson, when you take everything into consideration.

Karlsson spends an average of 27:11 TOI/game while Hjalmarsson plays an average of 21:16 per game.

So Karlsson plays an average of 6 more minutes per game than Hjalmarsson, and I'll bet there is not a player who has" time of possession of the puck" more than Karlsson................so on balance he's not as terrible as those who are trying to paint him that way.

Oh did I mention he is the first Defence-man to reach the 20 goals/50 assists level, playing at less than 100%, since Brian Leech?

Kessel, who is third overall among forwards in the NHL, with 87 giveaways, is leading the leafs directly into the lottery draft.

Taylor Hall 95 giveaways.......72 takeaways
Joe Thornton 91 giveaways..70takeaways
Phil Kessel 87 giveaways.....36 takeaways

Phil is not too good at takeaways, is he?

Karlsson is of course a good defenseman. Best player on the team by a good measure.

I go back to my first post in the thread. NOTE: the context was about his Norris trophy chances (he ended up winning). I first started by talking about how high-event it is with him on the ice (GF and GA).

None of this indicates he's a bad player, or an unremarkable player (he is remarkable), but it certainly indicates a player who succeeds MOSTLY by outscoring. and he's a great outscorer who can make some average, but certainly unspectacular defensive plays. And of course he's only at the beginning of his career and progress.

And he has gotten better. So that's encouraging. I don't watch a ton of Ottawa games, so I put it to Sens fans: Does anything in particular happen when Karlsson isn't on the ice?

As far as I know, Taylor Hall, Joe Thornton and Phil Kessel are all forwards, and are the top three forwards in the NHL in giveaways.

The Stat of P% is used by the NHL, to put a little perspective on comparing teams who've played a different number of games.

This is because the NHL is the only Major sports league in North America that uses a points system, rather than Winning percentage that ALL other Major sports league in North America uses.

It's like everything just goes into slow motion... I swear I've seen Phillips spend 5 minutes just trying to skate from blueline-to-blueline.

One of the biggest criticisms of Karlsson during the 2011-12 season pertained to his usage. That’s because he averaged two fewer minutes of shorthanded ice-time per game than players like Zdeno Chara or Shea Weber, an indication of his defensive limitations.

This season, Karlsson has seen his distribution of ice time change. Not only is he playing a larger percentage of his team’s minutes at even strength and on the power play, Karlsson has gone from playing 9.2 percent of his team’s shorthanded minutes in 2011-12 to 25.1 percent this season (see Graph 1: Using ExtraSkater.com’s numbers, the graph shows the percentage of Ottawa’s even strength (EV Tm%), power play (PP Tm%) and shorthanded (SH Tm%) that Karlsson plays).

questions asked of 20 NHL head coaches – 10 in the Eastern Conference and 10 in the Western Conference

3. Who are your top three for the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman?

............................................Nevertheless, Karlsson received eight first-place votes, twice as many as Los Angeles King Doughty (4) and four times as many as the only other two blueliners – teammates Shea Weber and Roman Josi, two apiece – to get multiple first-place votes.

The Weber-Josi dynamic is fascinating. Weber’s name has been regularly mentioned as a Norris candidate but it’s clear the coaches have been wowed by his Swiss teammate. Weber had a slight edge in balloting over Josi – he showed up on seven ballots to Josi’s six – but it was tight.

Other defencemen who got one first-place vote included Montreal’s P.K. Subban, injured Flame Giordano, Minnesota’s Ryan Suter, and Chicago’s Duncan Keith. Other defencemen who got at least one vote included Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang, Montreal’s Andrei Markov, Ranger Ryan McDonagh and San Jose’s Brent Burns.

Once you tally up all the balloting, though, the final Norris standings amongst contending blueliners are as follows: Karlsson, Doughty, Subban, Weber, Josi, and Giordano.

Biggest game of year for Ottawa and the Norris Trophy candidate is minus-3 after 20 minutes. Hmm. Not my favourite.
