Norris trophy winner Eric Karlsson, who suffered a 70 per-cent tear to his Achilles in a game against Pittsburgh Penguins back in February, was expected to miss the remainder of the season, but his return now seems like a real possibility, after took part in practice drills and didn't seem to be showing any signs of discomfort.

Karlsson skated a regular shift alongside defense partner Marc Methot at practice Wednesday, and the team said Karlsson will travel to Washington for the Senators' game Thursday (7 p.m. ET, TSN) and decide after the morning skate if he'll return to the lineuphttp://www.nhl.com/ice/ne....htm?id=667438&print=true

If he plays, OV is going to have his pocket picked time and time again!

It's not a stretch to say it will likely take a few games, at least, for him to get his game legs back...If he doesn't re-tweak anything while getting hit.

I'm only mildly concerned that he may re-injure his Achilles, but maybe moreso that he'll injure or pull something else, either because of his speedy return/lack of reps, or overcompensation from the injury. I'm excited to see him back, but I'm really hoping it's not a mistake...

Spent the most TOI of any Senator, and with two assists the only player on either team with more than 1 point.

Not bad.

James Gordon @SensReporter
Donovan just said on @TEAM1200Ottawa that Travis Zajac reached out to Karlsson through a teammate to tell him not to come back. Interesting.

New Jersey Devils center Travis Zajac struggled to return from surgery related to his own ailment last season, and while his issue was a rupture instead of a clean cut, he’s speaking from experience. The Ottawa Citizen’s James Gordon passes along word from Team 1200 that Zajac advised Karlsson not to play on Thursday:

And again last night last night Karlsson lead the Sens with TOI vs the Capitals and was the main reason they held OV to one assist and only three shots. He forced OV to cough up the puck a few times and even decked hin a couple of times to boot.

Overall Karlsson played one of his best games this season.

And again this season, Karlsson leads the league in goals against while he is on the ice, ignoring PK goals against.

His offense is back but his defensive coverage is worse than ever imo.

He's abysmal in his own end. Always has been. Anderson on a career year and a half covered up a lot of problems for the Sens for a time. Karlsson being completely inept defensively is one of them.

He was getting better before his injury I think. He'll probably never be physically strong enough to be great in his own end but he's smart and skilled enough to not be a liability at least. He's been a liability more often than he should in the games I've seen this year though.

I'm someone who thought Karlsson defiitely deserved the Norris a couple of years ago. But yes, I think his defense is worse this season.

Currently sitting with a - 4 rating, not terrible, but considering he's spending an average of almost 28 minutes a game, on the ice, he's going to be on ice for most of the the scoring for both teams.

Only Ryan Suter spends more TOI than Karlsson does, among ALL players in the NHL.

BTW, he also leads all d-men in goals and points, and if you've seen him play in his last couple of games, his skating is getting back to where it was prior to his injury, so expect the rest of his game to pick up.

Gets scored on at an astronomical pace. Even ice time considered, even strength, he's near the very top of the league.

He's abysmal defensively. Totally inept. You're just blinded to it.

This is exactly what you said about him two seasons ago, when he won the Norris.

Maybe it's you who are blinded to his overall play. Did you not see him keep OV off the score-sheet once again, and even deck his ass twice?..........and also strip him of the puck a couple of times??

Fact - first in the league in goals against while he's on the ice, non-PK time.

Is that to blame on your goaltending? Or him?

Don't know if you've watched any Sens games, but they, as a team, are not where they were last season defensively. It's not one player, it's younger players with new responsibilities that are having a hard time as a group. The loss of Alfredsson and Gonchar has opened up a lot of minutes for these younger players who may have not been ready for it.

I'm sure lots of players aren't very good defensively, and in that sense, it's a team thing. Including Karlsson.

Love him, but as of right now he is playing far too much 30 mins a game .25 mins max would be ideal ,keeps him fresh and makes him more dangerous .In both ends of the rink

There has been lots of banter about the kid and questions about just how good he can be.

In his third season Bobbie Orr played 67 games, he finished with 64 points including 21 goals. This was in a high scoring era. If you compare Orr and Karllson over the first three years of their respective careers, I believe that the kid has a small lead in overall point total.

Orr exploded in his fourth year. But, up to that fourth year many questioned his defensive play.

Spezza is having a wonderful year. But the kid is very close to him in being the difference maker for the Senators.
