Yeah. Mogilny won the Lady Byng in 2003.

Wow, totally had no memory of that. Had to look it up.

Doesn't seem as any leaf has ever won the Norris, but there may have been some nominated and become a finalist.

There's a decent number of Leafs winnners actually:

Mogilny won the Lady Byng in 2003, Gilmour won the Selke in 1993, Pat Burns won the Jack Adams in 1993, Jason Blake won the Masterton in 2008, and Curtis Joseph won the King Clancy in 2000.

I think the "King Clancy" is a leafs trophy, NOT an NHL trophy.

its an nhl award given to a player who best exemplifies leadership in the community.

winners are traditionally the well known "good guys" in the hockey community.

How do you mean? I got my information from the NHL site, which lists diverse winners from many different teams (last year was Doug Weight)

It just seemed that way on this site http://cdn.nhl.com/maplel...l_time_trophy_winners.pdf
But not saying it's correct, or that I'm right, just the PDF seemed to have it listed as a leaf trophy, I guess I just read it wrong wrong then.

I would say he is top 5 in the league right now. His offensive skill is far superior than anyone at this point, but his average defensive play keeps him from norris consideration against the likes of weber, lidstrom, and chara all of whom have the premier defensive game to match their offensive abilities.

We'll see tonight if his vastly superior offensive game, and his improved defensive game (compared to previous season) is enough to get the votes required from the PHWA to edge out the other two finalists.

I wish I had time to do this kind of analysis. Same kind of statistical sophistication, but also manages to see each player many more times than I have.

The whole thing comes down to an interpretation of "all-round ability". It's evident to me that Weber was the best two-way player of the three this season.

I see that I started this thread back in February. I am thrilled that someone resurrected it. This kid is a very special talent. I actually thought Weber should have won because I thought he deserved the Norris last year. Yet, the kid had a remarkable year. It has been great fun watching the way he plays the game. I think he does a bigger year next season because his play can lead to a substantial improvement in the games won by the Senators.

I don't even think he should be nominated. Why should they consider that he can't play D, in terms of winning it, but ignore it for a nomination?
- prock

Seems you were wrong, because if he could not play D (as you wish) he would not have garnered the votes to be voted the Best D man in the NHL last season.

Obviously his offense was head and shoulders above all other defensemen, and he defensive play was no where near as bad as you made it out to be. Perhaps you should not rely only on stats, when assessing a player.

Or perhaps the Dec 3rd game when Karlsson forced Ovechkin to turnover the puck to him, time and time again, was the game that put him over the top in Norris votes

I really hope the voters didn't decide on Dec 3rd who they were picking to win the Norris. Kinda cheapens it don't you think?
