I'd say they could probably get Halek for Colbourne and a pick.
- Jimmy_T

Why do you agree with this?
- mfreedman

What Burke won't do to sign free agents, sets the team at a disadvantage when giving offers.

well elliott is playing well so the leafs could try and trade for halak

schenn ,mac or kulie and kadri would that do it ?

- The_Vark

Yeah, I keep thinking Halak too, and they do have a good young goalie in Ben Bishop, but STL is rolling along and though Elliott is lights out right now, too much good goaltending is what you need for the playoffs.

Love to see and yes it would take Schenn, prospect and an established forward.

I find it odd that if Getzlaf is even remotely avaliable that he was Burkes plan B and not plan A.

I'm not a Wilson fan, but do you really think they are taught to play like last night?

Keep in mind some of the FA signings that occured this summer.

Leino, Ernhoff, Conolly, Regher, Prospal, etc...

Not all FA signings work out.. Burke's strength has been in trades, and thats what he is working with.

All that needs to happen is a coaching change, and we'll get a good idea where we are really at

Like a few others have asked- Why on earth would the Leafs have any interest whatsoever in Oduya? Unless it's Oduya for Komi, and even at that I think I'd still rather have Komi and his bloated contract than Oduya and his slightly less bloated contract. I can't see them giving up ANYTHING else for Oduya.

I think that the system that is being impelented can be easily countered by a skilled team (i.e. what happend last night). When that happens, the coach needs to adjust. Wilson doesnt adjust, and the scoring just continues.

Our systemis NOT maintanable. It is solely based on offense, leaving our defencemen and goalies to cover tons of offensive mistakes. They can prevent a lot of them, but eventually the puck is going in. Tighten up the defence, and watch how fast the goaltending improves.

Wilson wont change his system, so he needs to go

Can't disagree what with you say. I think Wilson has them playing a style that HE THINKS suits the type of team he has. It's all about speed and generating offense from the rush. Leafs don't have the size and grit to win all the boards and when it breaks down on the rush they are wide open to giving up scoring chances against. Wilson is going not anywhere until season end and I'm sorry to say when they miss the playoffs again, he goes, Carlyle comes in and Burke will try to get the players to play that style you refer to. That's why I say to salvage the season, a premier goalie is needed and that's a tall order.

So we ignore his phobia of giving out long term contracts, front loaded contracts and giving full NTC/NMC?

Problem is that if a premier goalie comes in and salvages the season, WIlson stays.

We are not going anywhere with wilson besides a first round exit.

I know it sucks, but we need to miss the playoffs for this team to get better

Agreed. Tough pill to swallow. The only thing that's keeping them in 8th is no one below is making a run.

How are Leino, Carter, Gomez, Redden, etc... working out so far for their clubs?

Its a very unselfish move actually. by not giving out these contracts, if he happens to move onto a new team, the next GM isn't stuck with his dead weight. I know its not intentionally unselfish, but I like it. A player should have to constantly prove their worth, not have one year of good hockey then be safe for the next 10.

This is a professional sport, and if you dont maintain good numbers, you shouldnt keep earnign big $.

Is anyone else hoping that Burke flew to NYC to talk to Howsen about Carter?

Our top 6 is only lacking a Top Center, and although an upgrade on Kulemin/MacArthur would be cool too, it's not a need.

For some reason I could see us getting Umberger and Carter in a deal....

LEAFS STARTING TO LOOK ELSEWHERE???? --- For a GM??

Screw firing the coach. Put pressure on the Ego-driven-Dark-Lord himself.

Toronto is getting so screwed by his ego laden management and only now can people start to see it.

I am growing more and more fond of a coaching change as well. I wasn't in the beginning, but this team continues to have "nights" off or slow starts. There is enough talent now on this roster to be a playoff team, and they have squandered a number of points IMO do to special teams, and coaching decisions in game

I could find as many if not more that work out, so picking out struggling players is irrelevant to the point.

And you are dancing around the fact that star players want long term contracts they want front loaded contracts they want to NMC, so Burke refusing to give because HE doesn't like them is infact selfish.

Finally he's the ONLY who won't give them out, so this maintain preformance stuff is again a useless point, because if he wasn't the GM of the Leafs your opinion on his methods would be different.

i hope so, carter IS what the leafs need more than nash. smaller dollar amount, 40 goal scorer, center position. only drawback is length of contract and perceived 'don't give a poop' attitude. however, he no longer has a NTC, so if it don't work out, the leafs can hopefully recoup whatever they traded for him...hypothetically
