Actually, when Dreger reported the Leafs' renewed interest in JVR last night, Luke Schenn was never mentioned at all. All he said was that Philly would likely want a defenceman back. I'm confused as to where this "Luke Schenn +" package came from as it certainly wasn't from TSN. Have a look here:

BB would much sooner dump Komi's salary before moving the younger, more versatile Schenn, as he does have pending UFAs to deal with and Komi's making money to sit in the press box after being outplayed for a regular roster spot.

Leafs and Flyers fans...can we both stop being idiots about the value of JVR and Schenn.

It's as simple as this:

JVR - Has not been consistent enough to live up to his hype. Is still feeding off the hype of being taken 2nd overall which is keeping his trade value/price slightly higher then it maybe should be. Ton of potential to be a dominant player if he can learn how to make space for himself on the ice. Higher upside then Schenn.

Schenn - Pretty inconsistent as well, which is to be expected of a 22 year old stay-at-home dman. Anybody that expects more from a 22 year old dman is a fool, and that applies to most Leafs fans who think he should be almost Scott Stevens by now. Has progressed closer to expectations then JVR, but not by much. Drafted 5th overall by the Leafs which is also over-hyping his value because a lot of Leafs fans have this emotional attachment to him as the first real piece of the Leafs rebuild.

In the end, a one for one trade would leave many fans on both sides happy and unhappy, which to me sounds like maybe, just maybe it's a perfectly fair deal. But frankly, given that both teams want pieces that will help their team right now...the trade doesn't make sense for the above reasons...both players are no where near what folks project them to be and will not put either team over their respective humps this year.

This is a pretty good and fairly reasonable analysis. You must be on the wrong board

In evaluating a prospect or young player you look at a bunch of things - ceiling, likelihood to reach potential, typical development arc for position (goalies, power forwards, etc develop slower), tools, value of position, etc.

I think JVR's tools are a little better for his position (skating, passing, shot) than Schenn's (big hitter, but less mobile) at this point. Both still have large upsides, and I'm assuming that both are likely to reach potential in < 2 years.

The reality though is a big strong power forward is worth more than a strong, big hitting defensive defensman. Right now mobility is the top quality in the NHL, and that will hurt Schenn's value.

Wow I hate, I mean REALLY hate how every other team in the league over values their players and prospects and craps on the Leafs. JVR had one good playoff run. Has been average in both regular season's he has played and he is valued more than Getzlaf or Parise. LOL

Stay at home defensemen that lead the league in hits at 22 years old are a hot commodity. Schenn will only get better, defenseman get better with age as the position is all about position and timing. This guy will be a top tier defenseman in this league, like Lefebvre or Foot. You win cups with this kinda guy.

Glad we're not giving up on him and shipping him to Philly for an unproven kid with some upside who lacks interest.

Call me crazy....BUT is it beyond the realm of possibility that we just stay on course? I mean, we're 7th right now, the 6th place team has played what, 2 more games than us? and we're two points back and play them on Saturday? We just took 3/4 points from one of the hottest teams in the league and we're getting our key contributors back...

I'm hoping we stay the course, get a taste of playoffs and make a pitch for Parise in the offseason and the following offseason we'll pitch for Getzlaf.

Probably too sane for Hockeybuzz...sorry guys.
