What would you guys give up for Jeff Carter?

I would think that contract alone would hurt some of the return that Columbus would get if he had a more reasonable contract like Kovalchuk's.

- leafs93

as little as possible, preferably nothing. These are not the droids you're looking for.

That said, I actually think the contract is one of the best things about him. He's pretty consistent offensively. Going to give you 30 goals a year (or damn close to it) for the next 7-8 years and he makes less than Kessel - and that's NOW!.

Kessel's going to be getting a raise in 2014

This is the easiest way to avoid cap Circumvention. No idea why they didn't see that's the way it would go. Then you can still average a guy out but giving him a raise in years 3-4 or something, but no more shaving 4 Mil in cap hit by dropping it down to minimum
- Big_Lightnin

Exaclty and I hope BB pushes for the length of contract restriction. It's time they go over all the loopholes and fix them. Heck hire me and I'll do it

Not a big fan of Carter, but his contract is actually a very good one..... in three years time it will be viewed as a bargain for a 30+ goal scorer

I agree the cap hit is good but will it be after the next CBA? He gets injured a lot too.

Greatest thing ever.

What I can't understand is how come the Kessel deal seems to be the gold standard for bad trades and is endlessly discussed.

Even over the Gomez trade? Outside of Montreal fans, everyone else seems to give the Habs a pass on that one. McDonaugh is like top 2 or 3D averaging 25+ min/night and the Habs got 5 years worth of 7+ million and the guy hasn't scored in a year almost... and is single digit points this year.

yes, I would rather have Seguin + Hamilton + Knight than Kessel... every day, but at least there is a discussion and an arguement to be made there (sort of).

The habs lost that deal in a HUGE way AND screwed themselves cap-wise for as long as his contract.

Grabo to me is an absolutely certifiable 2nd line center.

He can create a spark and even take the game over with scoring. May not be 1st line material on a game to game basis but definitely way higher than 3rd line material.

- leafs93

I really think he can be a 1st line centre if they want him to. This guy doesn't shy away from challenges and he can take and dish some out. If he played with Kessel and Lupul then opponents will have hard time shutting that line down because Grabo and Lupul can hit and all 3 can control the puck and are an absolute threat on their own. So if we can't find that 1st line centre then keep Bozak there but not Connolly.

Whats wrong with Kessel?? After all is said and done he will be a 500 goal scorer. You think they grow on trees??

Yes it will be. It's $5.27M!

The cap isn't going to go down $30M. and if it does go down significantly, they would roll back salaries again, so his hit would go down also.

Because even though there is no evidence with Seguin as of yet, he will clearly be a 3,000 point player with a cup ring on every finger.

Then the other question will be in 8 or 9 years when he is still a $5.27 million cap hit at the age of 35+ will he be worth it.

I think the concern is you are basically stuck with him until 2022 at that cap hit. Quite a risk.

Let's say the cap is going to stay the same... The Leafs will have just over $11 million to re-sign Grrabovski (UFA), Crabb (UFA), Boyce (RFA), Franson (RFA), Aulie (RFA) and Gustavsson (UFA). I guess you prioritize them, and sign them as you can:

Grabovski: $5 m
Franson: $1m
Aulie: $1m
Crabb: $1m
Gustavsson: ????
Boyce: ????

I would gladly trade two firsts and a second everyday (if I could) for a proven 35+ goal scorer

You guys put too much stock into the unproven

Have to remember that Burke didn't know he was giving up a number 2 pick overall.

He says he would still make that trade any day of the week but he has to say that. If he says he shouldn't have made that trade then he is basically throwing Kessel into the frying pan.

The owners win the battle every time, and then lose the war.

Every CBA has been an attempt to protect themselves from themselves.

And it fails every time.

Even Seguin's play to date doesn't prove anything. Even if he was first overall wouldn't prove anything.
