according to bob mckenzie last night on nhllive there was nothing serious between the flyers and leafs regarding the rumored deal of jvr for schenn. just talk. and that the flyers would command more in return than just schenn.
- hammarby31

Yeah. Makes sense to me. I dont see the Flyers giving JvR up unless their getting back an elite defenseman, which I dont think Schenn is at this time.

Still disagree about the Pronger thing because he had a full year left, and if he didn't want to sign they still had plenty of time to trade him, very different then getting someone's rights, but your right, they traded him with the full intention of resigning him long term, and wouldn't have made the trade if that wasn't the case.
- RooNosHockey

Yeah, they wouldn't have given up Lupul, Sbisa, and 2 picks for a one year rental. Nor would they have gotten close to that back if they had to trade his rights the next year. So I think it's fair to say it's within the same logic as a trading for someone's rights in this case, at least from the Flyers standpoint.

jsaq or butsy...can't recall. i think they're both the same person anyway.
- hammarby31

I was yapping about it for sure, it's a thorn in my side.

I'm not suggesting Broad Street Bullies physically run a team out of the building because that's not this club but I would love if teams coming in feared getting destroyed by the high tempo score a ton of goals great defensively sound Flyers.

Non stop full throttle in your face welcome to hell hockey.

Yeah, the problem is, a mention of trade talks between leafs and flyers and JVR turns into the Flyers shopping JVR. I don't think the Flyers want to let him go at all. It would take an offer they can't turn down to move him. Others have said it and I think the Flyers also realize they can't trade every player they sign to a long term deal. But they also can't turn down offers they feel better their club.

I don't think they want to trade JVR either, I think they want the JVR beast we saw last spring.

Kid just needs to be healthy, same as Schenn.

As long as JVR is out, he should get that surgery on his abdoman that he needs, so he can be really healthy come playoff time.

Exactly. The Leafs called and asked about JvR, if anything. The Flyers didn't go knocking on doors offering JvR up.

With Schenn I think it's half injury setback and half nerves/mental. Having those injuries is going to slow down your start and it's also going to weigh on you mentally. He probably feels pressure to perform now after missing so much time and with the other rookies contributing regularly in the points column. I think he will find his way. For once I think I can say that the all star break might be good for this team this year.

I still don't like trading for rights. It's not like the players you sign will sign a discounted deal because you traded for his rights.

It's often the other way around. Inflated in price or years.

Did anyone see Tocchet yapping on twitter last night with his proclamations?

- Pronger will be back
- JVR will not be traded unless for Weber
_ Schenn could be moved

i hate it too. to me, it just shows that the team trading for the rights is serious and really wants the player. in turn, they lose some negotiating leverage with the player. i think any ufa would give all serious teams an opportunity to present their offer, but what the hell do i know?

It depends. It could prevent a bidding war, or you could end up over paying... Your taking a gamble to talk to the guy before anyone else, and that could work out for you.

Example:

Player A gets traded to the Flyers and wants 4.2 million for 3 years. He is from Toronto, and would likely decide to sign with Toronto if they made a similiar offer, But since the Flyers already traded for him, and are giving him what he wants, he signs, taking Toronto completely out of the equasion.

If he wants to go to Toronto that badly, like Hamhuis wanted to go to Vancouver, he will. The Flyers managed to recoup the pick, but that won't always happen.

I will say that, for the most part, Holmgren usually has a deal 75-80% done BEFORE he trades for rights. He went to Nashville in the Timonen/Hartnell deal, and got a window to negotiate and had the deals basically done by the time the trade was announced.

Still, that said, I'd rather keep the picks than trade them for a week's advanced negotiations.

I'm sure in most cases, GM's use the grapevine to see if the interest is mutual.

It's like an old boys network way of letting a buddy get some kind of asset for a UFA
