Speaking of hard realities Spazzo

How did the respective farm teams fare...

2016-2017:
Marlies lose 5 key players to the Leafs. Players who become the greatest rookie class the NHL has ever seen.

The AHL Standings...

Marlies 89 points in 76 Games .586
(2nd in North, 1 point out of first)

Binghampton 60 points in 76 Games .356
(last in north, for second year in a row)

Just in case you want to make excuses, the top 20 players in terms of games played between the 2 rosters were an average age less than 6 months apart.

So... Despite losing the greatest rookie crop ever, the Marlies >>>>>>> Sens farm teams.

Add in the fact that the Sens were (are?) the oldest team in the league and have 2 untradeable contracts...

and this franchise didn't win a cup last year or ever.

That is some tough reality

Crazy questions. Makes the assumption that a teams organizational depth is measured by the success of their AHL team. No evidence of any correlation. Baby Sens won Calder Cup a few years ago. There was no great surge of talent that came out of it.

Erik Karlsson's went to the AHL for a cup of coffee. Jason Spezza spent too much time in AHL because Jacques Martin was unhappy with his defensive play.

I don't disagree with your comments on age. Boucher loves veteran players. I like the younger players and hope the Sens add two rookie forwards and two rookie Dmen to start the season.

On the contracts: never liked the Bobby Ryan contract. Said right from the beginning it was a mistake. He is a weak skater and poor skaters see their game fall off very quickly starting around age 28. At some point Sens are going to have to do something to move the Ryan contract.

I like Phaneuf. He was an absolute warrior coming down the stretch and in the playoffs. He was a huge contributor to the Sens getting to game 7 of the ECF. More important, Phaneuf is in great shape, he is still young (6 years younger than Marleau).

See what happens when a poopty team gets lucky or gets a hot goalie? they were not great in the regular season.
(7 NHL careers on that team... not bad)

You may like Phaneuf, but the Sens couldn't give that contract away, literally... so not many GM's like him all that much.

Sorry.

Love when you guys paraphrase my posts without appropriate attribution. I am pleased to know you take time to read and think about the stuff I post. You have really put yourself out there this summer.

I conceed the media has egged you on and encouraged you to dream in technicolor. But, a new season is right around the corner and we will get back to talking about the scoreboard soon enough.

First of all he has a no trade contract. He does not want to leave Ottawa and will not waive his right to stay.

Second, he waived his no trade contract to get out of Toronto.

Hard to understand the Leaf fan obsession with Phaneuf. He has been a great leader and warrior for the Sens. He has been better than anyone expected. He is a perfect match to play behind Karlsson. He is probably better than any Dman the Leafs have on their current roster.

Let me put it in very simple terms. I don't think the Leafs come close to making the playoffs. The third period problems of last year will start in the first period because they will not surprise anyone this year.

The young Leaf forwards will be fine. The problem will be entirely on the backend including goaltending. As Leafs get hurt in heir own end more fans will, wonder why they gave up Phaneuf to the Sens.

I think the obsession Leaf fans have with the Phaneuf contract has more to do with the problems they have with their own defense.

Did he not waive to get out of Toronto to come to Ottawa?

Do I misunderstand?

Please show me the flaw in my thinking.

Oh! I thought it was similar to Josh Gorges when he refused to go to the Leafs after being dealt by the Canadiens.

Seriously, I have never been able to figure out the Leaf obsession with Phaneuf. He has great fitness, he is really popular with the fans and his team mates. He is 6 years younger than Marleau.

Why do Leaf fans obsess on Phaneuf?

Ottawa does not make it to the ECF without Phaneuf. Phaneuf is a win/win for the Sens. Why does this upset Leaf fans so much?
