It should help.

The concern I would have is that NOTHING makes a difference as much as a winning team.

Ottawa has been a playoff team, for a while now, but NOBODY considers them a contending team and EVERYBODY (including Sens fans) were shocked they went as far as they did last year. EVERYBODY also knows that they had a lot of breaks go their way to get there.

Are they going to improve? I don't think many people outside of Ottawa fans believe that. In the very near future there will be an issue signing Karlsson (although I suspect they get it done). The minor league team was horrible last year. Pinning future hopes on an american college center and a Dman from the Q does not sound promising.

Bottom line... Ottawa is not set up to be a perpetual contender and there is every possibility they start regressing. That may hurt attendance as much as a new arena helps it.

Besides... you listed a bunch of very valid reasons why Ottawa struggles with attendance (comparatively). Not many of those reasons go away with a new arena.

thing is there will be virtually no parking around the arena and the LRT will be the primary way for people get home.

instead of whining about the parking lot in kanata, sens fans will have something new to whine about. the downtown LRT.

having to drive 30 minutes to the arena would stop only the most casual of fans from attending games. a move to a more favourable location would probably see little if any increase in attendance outside of years where the on-ice product is elite. long-term it will probably make no meaningful difference. it looks like the existing local habs, bruins, leafs fans etc are pretty loyal with no signs of converting. the population is large enough to sell out every game with ease if they were all sens fans. that's not the case. it's been what, 25 years? it is a bit surprising that they haven't won everyone over yet. makes you wonder how successful a 2nd toronto franchise would actually be since it could be argued that people in the gta are leafs fans first and hockey fans 2nd.

From downtown Ottawa to the CTC, on a game night, is not a 30 minute drive.

It's closer to 50 - 60 minutes on a game night, during the week, at the same time as people are leaving work.

When I go to games, that start at 7:30, I leave (South end) around 5 pm, to arrive in time to park, and get into the Arena by about 6:45.

I have explored using public transportation, but it's never been a viable option for anyone living in the core of the city, Gatineau, the south end of the east end of Ottawa.

The CTC is located on the western edge of Ottawa, the vast majority of people are arriving along the same routes for the east.

A centrally located arena resolves a lot of the commuting issues, as everyone will be arriving from all directions by public transportation.

No, not really.......... it will be the best option. It would mean not driving, not paying for parking, and having more money to spend at games, and only be about a 30-45 minute commute each way for me (as an example)

Well I hope it works out better for you than it is for Toronto. I am an hour outside in Guelph.

I either have to drive to a Subway station and spend 30 min each way on the subway and THEN drive home. Or I try to take the Go train, but it often doesn't run late enough to get me back to my car.

The moral of the story is don't necessarily think public transit will be adequate. It is (frank)ing miserable in the GTA

Ah I getcha.

I have no frame of reference for this sort of thing. Everything's too far apart here so we all just drive the 3+ hours to events.

Guelph is a good hour from a subway station, in decent traffic or at least 30-40 minutes from a Go Station.

It's a 3 hours drive to Regina or Saskatoon for CFL or NLL games from here. 5 to Calgary if you want to see an NHL game. Do it all the time. Gotta go that far if you want to get to an airport anyway.

For me, it'll be the first train going east, and others will take the first train going west, from either the pisimi station or the Bayview station (one on each side of the arena) departing every five minutes or so before and after games, that will carry 10,700 passengers per hour, each way..... so 100% of the people who use the new LRT will be on their way in way less than an hour after a game ends

Plus there's also the north south line (already in operation) that many other people will take ......... it departs every 8 minutes or so, from the Bayview station (beside new arena)

There will also be buses to Gatineau as well I suspect.

It will be a much better exit from games than the mess we currently have.

Let's keep in mind that Ottawa has a population under 1 million people.

Approximately 40% of the workforce in the Ottawa Gatineau area work for the Federal Government, either as an full-time employee, or on contract.

They all have "Flex" hours, and can start as early as 7AM, or arrive as late a 10AM .... and leave work after their 7.5 hours of work, accordingly.

The current BRT system, with it's buses only roads, works like a charm, and has won awards a few times over the past couple of decades.

I doubt it will be anything like the TTC, having to service a population base of more than 6.5 million people.....that 6 times that of Ottawa.
