Yes. The two way top-6 winger with 27 goals is better than the 3rd/4th line center with 25 points.

You goddamn idiot.

This signing, of Marleau, hearkens back to the days when the leafs were handing out "Retirement Contracts" in the 80's and 90's ............ to aging, past their prime players who just wanted to finish out their careers in toronto.
- D0PPELGANGER

Except...

They gave up no young players or prospects
The contract won't interfere with signing the guys they will need to re-sign
They didn't trade youth for a futile glory run that ultimately hurts the team down the road.

... Let's see, who gave up a younger, better, player and a high pick as part of their futile glory run that netted them the coveted 28th pick?

Don't go full Spatso, Dopps. If you want to say he is overpaid, fine, we will all admit that. The fact is, it doesn't matter and you are barking up the wrong tree if you think you can argue that it does.

Instead... how about you or Spatso explain the issues you both want to ignore...

What do you do with those horrible Phaneuf Smith and Ryan contracts? What if MacArthur doesn't retire?

More importantly, and related...

How are you going to re-sign Karlsson. Do you think he is going to settle for 8 or 9 million??

Funny, when Boyle was aquired by the leafs, he was the best player in the NHL, and was going to do wonders for the leafs ............... it was heralded as the best deadline deal on the season...........

Just like the signing of a 38 year old Marleau to a typical "leaf retirement contract" ........ it's the best contract signing in the history of free agency.

You trollonto fans really have to dig deep in a desperate attempt to justify the "leaf retirement contract" signing of a 38 year old (when season starts) ............ Karlsson's contract has 20 more years left to run on it, and nothing can be done about until this time next year at the earliest.

Yes, it will be an important issue for the Sens, in a year from now ........... but you're just using this, because you need to find someway to spin this questionable signing, into a somewhat acceptable context for the leafs run at the Cup ...........

This signing, has now raised the bar for the leafs Cup aspirations ............. they are NOW in "Win Now" mode.

Marleau signing signifies Leafs in win-now mode

For those who take a glass-half-empty view of the move, there’s this: Because Marleau is a player in the age 35-plus category, the website capfriendly.com states that the Leafs would get no cap relief in the event they opt to buy out Marleau, who will be 40 when the deal expires.

http://www.torontosun.com...ies-leafs-in-win-now-mode

Salary cap pushes Leafs into win-now mode:

Marleau, the third free agent 36 years of age or older to join the club on the weekend, was sought after by Lou Lamoriello because the Leafs GM understands that Nashville demonstrated just how close to winning many other teams are, and because he knows this window opened by Matthews, Nylander and Marner may shut much more quickly than most believe.

You are upset because the Leafs are in Win-now mode ...

and they did NOTHING to damage the future In fact, the present is still going to get better because they aren't done yet.

... and the Sens have done nothing, and can't, because their bad salary hurts now, AND in the near future.

Apparently not as good as toronto's ......... as they've just signed the last piece of their Cup winning plan, the steal of the UFA season!

The leafs are now "All In" and are making their Cup run beginning this coming season, with the acquisition of Marleau, who capitulates past a number of the best rookies in the entire history of the NHL, to become one of the three best forwards on the leafs .............. according to one your trollonto faithful here in this thread.

The leafs are in "Win Now Mode" and must win the Cup in the next two seasons (before they need to re-sign Matthews" as their window will be closed after that.

who said that.

i said he's a 1st line winger. he'll likely be playing on the 1st line with matthews and will likely be good in the role for 1-2 years.

leafs spread the talent across their lines.

You're gonna be real disappointed if you expect Marleau to be your first line LW.

Still a top 6 fwd, but probably better suited for a 2nd line role.

So you have so little that you are now repeating yourself? You and Spatso have nothing to fight with, so you are just repeating the same poop that was already shot down and making stuff up now?

You should actually read the Cox article and try to understand it. It basically talks about the cap preventing the leafs from becoming "too good".

Cox's argument is that the Leafs wont be able to sign all 3 of the kids. This has NOTHING to do with Marleau. Even if we assume he is right, Cox is basically saying the Leafs have

TOO MUCH TOP END YOUNG TALENT, for a cap league.

Thanks again Dopps, for making our point for us.

If the Leafs young talent is that good, what kind of a haul do you think one of them will fetch in trade?

yeah agreed, but I am not even so sure that the distinction in the lines is important. The leafs are deep enough up front to roll 3 good lines and a checking line.

matthews carried a 4th liner in hyman the whole year.

he'll be a big upgrade on hyman; for a year, maybe 2. seems like the obvious fit in the lineup.

We'll see. Expect him to see action on Matthews line, unless you think Matthews isn't a first line centre. He scored 27 goals playing mostly on the third line of an offensively inept team last year.
