Leafs chose Marleau over more cost-effective options

TSN Yost

- spatso

a Mcdonalds value menu burger is a more cost effective option than a Steak from a fancy steak house... but if you want the steak, you need to understand that you need to pay.

Hartnell at 1M is cost effective, no doubt... but a contending team can't play him in their top-6 and hope to win.

Actually, I'm surprised Ottawa didn't go out and get him. Perfect addition for a budget team with no cup aspirations.

Read the article. Burns and Vlasic are not part of the deal. Yost projects that Marleau is I need a bit tough playing in front of Leaf no name defense.
- spatso

Speaking of no-name defenses... what a dearth in talent Ottawa has beyond Karlsson.

Next best guy is Phaneuf, and since the addition of Hainsey, he'd find himself on the bottom pair for the Leafs.

I now understand why your hopes are so high for Chabot: they need to be.

I was happy with the signing. I think it's a great idea.

I'll take my perspective over a guy that thinks the value of first overall in a draft can be calculated by comparing career "games played" average per round selected.

The fact that you even use Yost as an argument in your favour is about your 5th major derp today. This is a stellar day, even for you.

Maybe the same place as the Shattenkirk to the Leafs for 8 years / 65 million source.

Denial can be rough. Phaneuf played huge down the stretch and through the playoffs into overtime of game 7 of ECF.

Nobody for the Leafs played D in the first round against WAshington as Phaneuf played in the first round against the bruins. Nobody's.

Between ek, ryan and phanoof, they'll effectively have $25m tied up in one player

Riiiiiight that's why the Sens asked him to waive for the expansion draft and then offered him up to everyone at half-price, with no takers. They even tried talking him into retirement 2 weeks ago, and tried to get an NHL doctor state that he was unable to play out the remainder of his contract. They even asked him if he would try Hossa's jock during the pre-season.

Love Yost. He is quickly becoming the TSN go to guy on numbers.

TSN as a history of putting the thumb on the scale to pump Leaf tires.

Yost does not. His calling out the feckless signing of a geriatric Marleau is good medicine.

Ottawa Senators ECF finalist.

Of course you do.

I have a bit of inside information, not a lot, but very reliable. Ottawa is fine with Phaneuf staying. They believe their depth on D results in as many as three young guys pushing for ice time next year.

They also know that Claesson has substantially better numbers with Karlsson than Methot.

congrats on that 28th pick and having the biggest laughing stock on TSN as your former blogger.

here is some Yost Math...

Gardner and Zaitsev are both better value than Karlsson last year. They both played more games than Karlsson.

So it's awesome, and fitting, that you think this moron supports your argument.

This is what, derp 7 today for you.

There is this thing that advanced stats proponents like to talk about. It is called Sample size.

You should go read about it.

Oh wait, nevermind, it won't help you.

I like Marleau a lot but he's really (frank)ing old and it's unlikely he lives up to that dollar value.

That said, he's probably what the Leafs need (aside from a competent defense)

Yost uses a lot of, as you geniuses put it, "fancy boy" stats in his arguments. Funny how you "love him" when he's writing negatively about the Leafs, but don't post anything along these lines:

Those minutes are vulnerable, though. Ottawa’s depth forwards, and second defensive pairing in particular, have struggled mightily against the strength of the Bruins and the speed of the Rangers. The Penguins have both of those attributes in spades. Their numbers this postseason with Karlsson on the ice versus Karlsson off of the ice are, in one word, insane:

The key for any team in beating Ottawa then becomes pretty simple: How do you keep Karlsson and whichever group of forwards he’s playing with in check? Breaking even against them head-to-head would all but ensure a series victory, because Ottawa’s depth has played poorly for 11 games and counting.

I remember back around Christmas when I said that Pierre McGuire was telling people that Knowledgable hockey guys were talking about the Sens as dark horse contender for the Stanley Cup. You did not want to believe it.

Sens will go into this season a far stronger team than the one that started the season last year.

The team knows how to play D. And, as they showed in the playoff they can score and they can can come from behind.

I believe the comment was the sample size on Claesson was in fact large enough to offer hope he can adequately replace Methot.

Yes I read and believe the analysis. The addition of CHabot and Harpur two very good puck handlers will go a long way to the goal Boucher has for the team.

Value has its own meaning. Just because you get great value at Giant Tiger does not mean you have the best. I have no doubt that there are going to be lots of players that score goals at significantly discounted cost to the value placed on costing McDavid goals. But nobody is going to take a 30 goal scorer at $5m over McDavid at $13.25m.
