The last season on his deal is worth something like 1.5 mil. Screams trade me to Arizona after I retire.

Yeah too bad the Leafs don't have any young talent, and don't have like 20 million coming off the books in the next couple years.

Oh wait

Patrick Marleau will be 38 years old (6 years older than Dion Phaneuf) when the 2017-18 season starts.

The trollonto fans here in this thread have maintained that Phaneuf is way too old for the NHL, and his contract is bad.

So how are you trollonto fans going to justify Marleau (six years older) and his now highest cap hit, being on the leafs roster for the next three seasons........ he'll be 40 in his last season...... Phaneuf will still be 6 years younger ....... but Dion is too old, right?

Please square this circle.

Dion is worn out and sucks. Marleau scored 27 last year and is a much needed veteran presence.

That was easy.

Why send him over there? Leafs have a dump so much closer, that will pay us for our used pieces.

How silly of me.

Perhaps they will give us a second rounder for taking him.

Marleau is 38, Dominic Moore is 38 and Ron Haninsey is 36 on opening day. Generally I am supportive of the Shanaplan. But, I don't understand this move to post prime players.

Are the Leafs going backwards with these signings?

I don't think adding a group of 36-38 year old skaters is really very helpful.

Most of last year's playoff teams are looking to shed some of their older players in a move to get even younger. The Leafs are adding three players that are on average more than 5 years older than Phaneuf.

Just does not seem to fit into the long term strategy as I understood it.

Several things coming out of Sens camp that are really interesting.

Colin White and Nick Paul are expected to win starting forward positions.

Chabot will get playing time with Karlsson and should make the team from the beginning of the season. Harpur will also win a D position.

The most interesting is the comments on Jaros. We heard for 2 years that he is a stud and that he has had a great year in Sweden playing against men. Now we are hearing his game may be the most NHL ready today.

We know that Chris Neil and Chris Kelly have not been offered contracts. Methot was lost in expansion draft.

We will see a minimum of 3 and perhaps as many as 5 rookies making Sens early season roster.

1, 2, and 3 year contracts. What about that screams long term to you?

The Leafs have a couple of years before they need to pay big bucks to their top end players, so it looks like they're pushing hard to bring in experienced players, who can still play, to reinforce the young core without giving up any long term pieces.

Fits in perfectly with establishing the same kind of talent cycle Chicago was running.

Has Ottawa done anything to improve that roster yet? Or are they actually counting on a bunch of b-grade prospects to do it?

TSN listed the best 50 prospects outside NHL. Ottawa has 4 players on list. Chabot is #3 overall. Leafs do not have a single prospect listed. But they have signed 3 guys pushing towards 40 years old.

Chicago had a proven #1 Dman when they decided to make their push. Leafs have Ron Hainsey. Tell me this is not an April's fool joke.

We'll see how many prospects Ottawa has left on the post draft rankings.

Then you can go back to calling them loser lists.

Yes, Leafs do not have an identical roster. A guy like Hainsey is a stop gap while the best dman outside the NHL develops.

There are no good Leaf D prospects other than their draft at 17 this year.

He is in the same depth draft range as Karlsson, Chabot and Ceci. So, maybe a feint hope.

So funny.

When the Phaneuf contract has expired, he will still be younger than The geriatric trio signed by the Leafs. Entirely entertained.

leafs had two of the youngest dmen olaying in the ahl last year. How do you figure?

Dermott chl compare very well to chabot, and when they played on the same team...yet somehow one sucks and one is you're teams great white hope. Awesome Sumer talk, nothing better than insane homer bs.

???what does that have to do with anything? Skill, ability productivity matters more no?

When phanuefs contract exprires the leafs will be 3years removed from Moore and 1year removed from Marlena and hainsey. What's your point?

Sheer nonsense. Chabot played over 40 minutes in the gold medal game. He was named MVP of tournament and was named best Dman and first all star.

Leaf prospect once shared same dressing room with him...but that is about it for comparisons.

How'd they match up when they were on the same team? How to their numbers match up in junior? No response for that eh, just gloss over it as usual. No idea how Dermott would have faired in that tournament dominating teenagers cause he was too busy playing solid pro game.
