And assuming the team with the lower P% had no games in hand?

No. Doesn't really matter.

No. Who cares who has games in hand. The team with the lower pts% has to perform better over the final stretch, therefore that's the better bet. Don't care who has played how many games. It takes a lesser performance for the team with the higher pts% to clinch.

How many points would there be separating a team with a .622 P% and one with a .616 P%? ( as in the example we've been talking about)

Don't really know or care. Did you want to discuss games played and points? Or just points%? Pick one of the two please. If we're talking about under four or five games remaining I'd prefer points and games remaining. The rest of the season don't bother with games played and just use pts%. So much easier.

So you admit that not knowing how many games each team has remaining in the ten days of the season matters.............when you are solely looking at P%, in this example.

probably one point. I'd still take the team that has the the points in the bank(ie, higher point percentage, more games played) than one that still has to earn them... especially when that other team has, over the course of the season, shown that it doesn't earn points at the same rate.

Hahaha. It still doesn't matter. Its just that the difference between a .617 and .622 sv% is easier to understand in terms of games remaining and points needed to clinch at that time. But notice, when it gets to that point, its not sv% and points, it's games remaining (and conversely games played) and points needed. When publications start publishing games remaining and points needed, have you ever noticed that pts % is not published in relation to those?

Never mind. You never noticed. This is beyond you.

Side point - they say the average newspaper and magazine is published to the level that a grade three student is capable of understanding. Just thought that was interesting.

why are you talking about save percentage

The papers I read publish the number of games played. and the points of each team. Even a grade three student can figure out the rest.

If you checked the stats at NHL.com, you'll see P% right there along side games played and points earned.

Yes.

And P% is Points/(games played*2)

It takes games played into account.

Therefore, bringing up games played along side point percentage is flawed.

They show you two of the stats that factor into the third.

Just like they do with Goals, Assists, and Points.

They aren't combining the two.

Irrelevant isn't the right word.

It's accounted for in pts%.

Dopps just being purposely dense, because he tried warping stats and got called on it.

And that's the point. They show games played, points and points percentage.

If just the points or just the points percentage were listed alone, all context is lost.

I'll give you an example.

If team "A" has a .500 P%, and team "B" has a .591 P%................it does not tell you the whole story.

One of these teams may have game(s) in hand, and you also don't know the points difference, if any.

That's why, going back to the example of placing a bet, you'd want to know a lot more than just P%.

What is the chances of the team with .500P% of catching the one with the higher P%?

Yeah I know, im meaning it's irrelevant to look at games when using pts% becuase it's already counted in there. You don't have to look at both.

Are you for real? It is mathematically impossible for .500p% to catch the higher team (unless the lower team wins considerably more pts or the higher team losses considerably more) You cannot be this stupid.

Well I think is possible that the team with a .500 P% can catch the team with the .591 P%.

In fact this situation actually exists today, and there is a lot of season left.

BUT, that's not the point.

ou just can't look and P% and make an informative call on this particular example, without knowing games played, games in hand for one team or the other, and of course the points difference at this point in the season.
