Id use the traditional term. Cinderella team.

Id say they had a great playoff run but an average regular season. Especially if its not a team with a recent history of cup win(s) and deep consistent playoff runs.

Funny how you "qualify" your answer............ is there a reason why the 2016-17 Senators are, in your words, a terrible lucky fluky team, because they had a minus goal differential, and came within one goal, in double overtime in game seven of the ECFs, of advancing to the Finals........... but the last team to actually make it to the Finals with a minus goal differential your "qualify" you answer?

I wonder what your reasoning is here?

The last time this happened, a team with a minus seven goal differential, faced a team with a plus 94 goal differential, in the first round....... and the minus 7 team advanced to the Finals.....................

Was that team the exception to your rule, the rule that make the Senators a terrible crappy team, or is there another reason?

are you (frank)ed?

lucky and fluky were your words not mine. what is wrong with you?

teams that give up more than they get don't usually succeed or get listed as great. common knowledge really. can it happen? sure. but it's not a sign of greatness or a common occurrence.

So, in your words, the 1966-67 toronto maple leafs, were NOT a team of "greatness" ..............because they finished the season sporting a –7 goal differential, beat the +94 goal differential Chicago Black Hawks in the first round, and went on to the Finals ...........

Seems like they had a Cinderella playoff run. No shame. Just the facts. But they won a few cups in that era so maybe the regular season just went bad on them.

Good comment.

As most of you know I am usually pretty astute in my observations it is fair to track the accuracy of my predictions.

After 10 years of my telling Leaf fans there is no there, they finally back into the playoffs and Leaf fans start talking parade and dynasty.

Leafs had a good year considering the composition of their roster. Little to demonstrate that this year will be more successful. Not uncommon, often frequent that a young team has a good year and falls significantly off the previous year.

Leafs are doing okay. I support the Shanaplan. But, not a fan of the triumphalism that makes Leaf fans the butt of most NHL jokes.

How does it feel to made to look ridiculous over you staunch "goal differential" obsession?

Look, each team sets up a system or style of playing, that best suits the players they have on their team....... in order to win as many games as possible.

So the Senators scored a couple of goals less than they allowed, who cares? They finished second in their division, gained home ice in the first two rounds (and the Finals if they had scored one more goal in double overtime), and came closer to winning the Cup, for the second time, than the leafs have in over fifty years.

The leafs play a system that allows for their younger faster players to score lots of points........ and it worked for them.

Each team has "needs" on their respective teams, to improve upon last season.

Ottawa needs more scoring, and the leafs need more defense.

Sens did not lose more than 2 regular season games in a row all year. This is the foundation and formula around which you build championship teams.

Karlsson is best at his position by a very long way. The Sens have a future star coming in Chabot. There is nothing you can say that is going to take Sens fans off the high they are experiencing this summer.

My hope is that Eric Karlsson has the best season of his entire career next year and the Sens easily win their Division and repeat with a very strong post season.

What a lie. Why bother? Did you think it would be believed?

they even lost 5 in a row at one point...

There was an 11 game run where they lost 9 of those games.

I think that is true. But you have lots of team (like Washington) that know how to score and even are good defenders but they don't know how to win when it matters.

Sens made major changes in their line up and coaching since Pierre Dorion came on board. He thinks he knows how Ottawa can win big time. He has made quite a few changes and there are more to come.

Sens went into playoffs with four solid lines and the best D play in the East. They were a lot stronger than the team that started the season.

With the additions of Chabot, Harpur and White as the year evolves they will be even better.

I do not discount that Dorion, who says he will never trade Chabot, would if the right player became available. We will see.

Your being very picky. Sens did not go more than two games where they did not earn a point.

the leafs actually had only one such stretch, which was only 3 games.

you're literally talking a one game difference between the two teams.

amazing a team of so many rookies and teenagers has already found what you refer to as a winning formula. that's a championship team in the making right there. a group full of winning kids!

This same moron goes on to post how huge of an impact chabot and harpur will make.

It's just so tasty seeing this goof post poop like "summer talk" claiming leaf fans have said something they haven't, chastise them for it and then turn around do exactly what he's claiming the leaf fans have do..... But he's doing it with unquestionably lesser talent.

You've got goal differential burned into your brain, and you can't get it out.

The Senators played a system, based on defense first, that worked to the point that they made it to the ECFs.

The system worked so well that the Senators never lost more than two consecutive games in a row all last season

That shows exactly how good their team is, but your little mind can't comprehend that.

On the other hand, the leafs used a system that allowed them to back into the last WC spot, and bounced in the first round. A pretty good step up from the previous season, when they intentionally tanked, and were lucky enough to secure the number one pick. Next season will be the true test of the leafs.

At this point I feel it necessary to point out that the line of reasoning that lead to this dispute indicates that the poster who first put it forward must believe that a hypothetical team finishing with a record of 28 - 54 (56 points) had a good season if they hadn't lost more than 2 regulation games in a row.

This is a possible scenario in which the hypothetical team lost 2 of every 3 games but never more than two straight in regulation.

Perhaps more spiritual guidance is needed to get a better grasp of this mathematical reality.

Let us pray.

I thought Leafs had great season. Most forget that after Christmas I was more positive about Leafs making playoffs than many Leaf fans. I was also positive about Leafs playing Washington saying they had a good chance. I believed the Leafs were a dangerous first round opponent for any team.

But being able to continue that into next year is a lot more challenging and I need to think about what happens when other teams play them more assertively.

Ok

Considering where they were and how they were playing what choice did you have? Pretty big change from 3 months earlier when you talked about how they were worse then last year.

Not so. I was positive about the Leafs making the playoffs when most Leaf fans were doubtful about their prospects. Or, more often, saying they did not care.

You're so full of poop.

You spent all summer saying they were worse than last year and first 3 months claiming they were going to crash after Christmas.

Now you claiming you were on leafs bandwagon saying you had them making the playoffs.

You don know you wrote all this down right, that it's right there in black and white? That you saying differently now doesn't change it?
