yeah well the only other team I can see a good argument for is Tampa, as favourite.

As you're considered the resident expert on things "taking a few years" combined with first and second place already being won I guess I'll just have to hope and pray for that 3rd spot or wild card. If I'm lucky.

There was a story earlier this year saying that Tampa offered to do the deal for Ceci and Ottawa said "no.

Your posts weren't from this year.

We aren't talking anymore about an attitude problem holdout who had proven nothing vs. a young Dman with potential.

Now we are talking about a guy who has proven he can be an impact top 6 vs a dman who has proven nothing.

The script has flipped.

All your OLD links prove is that Ottawa missed the boat. and the discussion here, including the derp about Drouin, is clearly about the future.

Yes I think that is a fair assessment of how the landscape may have changed. Drouin is clearly a player with a very high profile and expectations for a top 6 career or better

On the other hand, Boucher loves Ceci and has rebuilt his game to fit the Ottawa style. People should not forget that Ceci logged big minutes against top players all season. Not well known, Ceci played the playoffs with two broken fingers. Karlsson and Ceci are the only right handed shots among D players and prospects for Ottawa.

From Elliote Friedman (30 thoughts). I think it reveals what most insiders believe. Ceci is already very good and is going to become a lot better.

At his season-ending media conference, Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion said the Senators “would discuss internally” the possibility of asking Dion Phaneuf to waive his no-move, adding, “If ever we were to go that direction, I think I should let Dion know first.”

Dorion isn’t commenting, but word is Phaneuf was indeed asked to waive. That would allow Ottawa to protect Cody Ceci, Erik Karlsson and Marc Methot. I think the Senators have been asked a lot about Ceci over the past year, but they wisely held on. We’ll see what Phaneuf decides. I think Ottawa is sensitive to this one, because they feel Phaneuf has been a terrific teammate since he got there.

I think Karlsson had his best season ever this year. You cannot discount how important Phaneuf has been to the great year that Karlsson has put in.

I cannot believe the rumours that the Leafs are talking to the Hawks about Seabrooke. Seabrooke is similar age to Phaneuf, has nearly the same contract in terms of $000's but runs two years longer (oops it is 3 years longer, Phaneuf has 4 years left and Seabrooke 7).

Some reports out of Chicago indicate Leafs have interest in Seabrooke. This comment makes a lot more sense on the subject (from Friday Augello blog)

"That leaves Seabrook, entering year two of an eight-year, $55 Million contract extension and Hjalmarsson, 30, signed for another two years at $4.1 Million. If the purpose of the trade is to create some space on the Hawks payroll, then trading the 32-year-old blueliner making nearly $7 Million per season would be the most beneficial for Bowman.

The Leafs are undoubtedly looking out for immediate help on the blueline and GM Lou Lamoriello could have interest, but it unlikely that Toronto would be willing to add Seabrook’s lengthy deal, especially coming off a career-worst three goals last season."

There is no way the Leafs are intersected in him. He is one of the worst player/contract combos in the NHL. If you havent beenn paying attention the Leafs have traded those players (Phaneuf and Clarkson) to get away from again awful players

seems like either:

- Cox took the Ceci thing out of context to create a story. Ottawa doesn't have the depth at defense to trade anyone, but that story is pretty boring, or

- Dorion is a bigger idiot than it may seem.

probably a little from column A and a little from column B.

yeah, that makes perfect sense, and he would be a GREAT addition to the Leafs blue line.

But who do you deal for him? Is this Kapanen?

Ideally I'd love to see them trade Bozak and/or JVR, but I'm not so sure that's realistic. Unless of course this enables them to protect more assets. I'd imagine they've got some expansion draft issues.

hawks are (frank)ed from the salary cap, but still want to compete for a cup.

maybe jvr (@50%) for hammer

balance out with picks as need.

That could be interesting. Yeah, retaining on JVR would give them cap relief, and it's cap space we're not likely to need next year.

I really dont like helping them out of cap problems, but they cant take anyone with a cap hit. So Picks and prospects, and that worries me.

Maybe one of the players the leafs could lose like Leivo/Rychel etc.. plus pick(s)
Really not keen on paying a premium for a 30yo with 2 years left

I don't think we're solving their cap issues, to be honest, just pushing them back a year. And I don't really think they can compete for a cup, swapping out retained JVR for Hjalmarsson, either. They may get JVR out of it, but they get him for one year, then they have nothing.

I don't really care what we do for their cap problems, if it helps us.

$4.1M cap hit is reasonable for what he brings, I think.

But if it's picks and prospects, as you say, I'm not too keen on paying a high price either.
