Almost all of these "reasons" could have been applied to Kessel, and he was resigned.

Kessel hinted at looking at free agency
Ontario taxes are higher, as you pointed out
Ottawa and toronto are "good teams" not contenders as you pointed out
Kessel's hometown is elsewhere
Climate in Ottawa is pretty much the same as toronto

And if you think "larger cosmopolitan city" is a plus over a smaller more livable city, you would have a hard time proving that as a reason a UFA bases his decision on that, when choosing where to play.

If you think Ottawa made the trade for Ryan, thinking they'd have zero chance of convincing him to sign a new contract, then I'd call into question your ability to see things objectively.

I remember you using all those reasons to say Kessel would leave Toronto

Ottawa is colder than Toronto, and a smaller town... and also not a budget team. Kessel also never hinted at checking out free agency, that was all media spin and hype.

Kessel wasn't just traded to Toronto though, he actively wanted to come here, that was a huge part of why he was traded to Toronto over Nashville in the first place- the threat that if he was traded, he would just sign a TO offer sheet. That's why Burke went through the trouble of reacquiring his own picks.

Toronto is also a team on the rise now, while Ottawa is still in the early stages of a rebuild- if they know what's good for them.

So toronto acquired Kessel, when they were a team on the rise............and after he experienced the team and city, he decided to stay.

Sounds kinda like what will happen with Ryan.

So when there were hints Kessel might test free agency, is was all media spin and hype, and with Ryan it's not................okay?????

Left out the 3 biggest issues...... have money, willingness to spend it, cap room to spend it.

Leafs had all 3, Kessel signed no problem.

Ottawa is where on that?? Plenty of cap space..... owner doesn't have money to spend.

But yeah, use the Kessel/Leafs comparision because it's the same. Kessel was here for 4 years before he signed his new deal...Ryan wont even have 2 full years in Ottawa before deciding if he wants to stay long term.

Totally.... except for the part that ottawa doesn't have the money to do what the Leafs did with Kessel. Almost the same though...

Toronto wasn't a team on the rise when they acquired Kessel, they're a team on the rise now, when he re-signed.

Kessel wanted to come to Toronto in the first place, and resigned with the team, that was willing to pay him top dollar, and was winning.

Ryan was traded to Ottawa, after making it clear he wanted to be traded to Philly. Now he was happy to be traded, there's no denying that, but Ottawa wasn't his first choice, and he's shown that he wants to play for his hometown team.

Ottawa, this year, is showing that last year's success was a bit of an anomaly, that probably wouldn't have happened over the course of a full season. They played above their level and rode hot goaltending over a short season to get into the playoffs.

And, as we've seen in the past, with guys like Chara and Alfredsson... Ottawa isn't willing to pay top dollar to keep it's top players around. They managed to sign Karlsson to a pretty good deal... but he also couldn't expect as much as Ryan, because he was an RFA, not a UFA.

Ryan will probably be looking at Kessel-like money, and will likely get it on the open market.

This isn't to say he won't sign in Ottawa at all, but the situations between him signing there and Kessel signing in Toronto are completely different. One wanted to come here, and resigned with a team willing to spend and on an upswing, the other wants to play for his hometown team, and is on a team that may not be willing to spend. If he signs, that's good for Ottawa- they will have retained their top scorer- even if he doesn't really compare to the other top scorers in the division- but if not, it'd have been a real waste of a 1st and a prospect.

Kessel never hinted at free agency. In fact, signed almost immediately after he was eligible to re-sign.

Yes, a city like new York, LA, and even Toronto, would usually be more attractive to a 25 year old millionaire than Ottawa. Not for all of them, but most.

The leafs just came off finishing fifth in the conference when Kessel resigned. The Sens aren't gonna make the playoffs this year and don't have a first round pick. They're not a good team as you're trying to say. They're a bad team.

And the Leafs are not a budget team.

All of this is irrelevant though. Just because the Leafs managed to re-sign Kessel that has nothing to do with Bobby Ryan. The Sens couldn't convince their captain to stay. Why are you so deluded into thinking they'll get Ryan to?

He's been playing this game for ten years, insisting on players taking "hometown discounts" or "Stanley cup discounts" (that one was my favorite by the way... ). And the send have lost a few players because of it. What makes you think he's suddenly gonna stop now?

Eugene Melnyk's Net worth is estimated at around $1,004,319,818 in the Jan 9, 2014 edition of Canadian Business.

He has deep enough pockets on his own to pay players whatever he wants to pay them.

I didnt hear ,about what would happen to the ctc .But they were saying that a downtown arena, along with a casino has been discussed.I,am guessing with the new light rail , convention center along with an amped up landsdown. They are talkng about really reshaping downtown .Its probably a huge pipedream ,but one that would bring Ottawa up into real upbeat city

On the planet of Elixidir, there are two moons which orbit it. One is red and the other is white. The red one is closer to the planet, and it orbits the planet at twelve times the rate of the white one (but in the same direction). The Elixidirs enjoy watching eclipses of the white moon, much as humans enjoy watching eclipses of their sun. The total time it takes for the red moon to orbit the planet once is twelve months. How long (precisely) must the Elixidirs wait in between each eclipse before they can observe another one?
