Again, if Tampa runs the table, and Ottawa pulls off a 5 point run, both teams will be tied for points, but Tampa will likely have the ROW tie breaker, and thus bump Ottawa.

In order for Ottawa to ensure beyond any possibility that Tampa doesn't pass them, they'll need to get 6 points.

So you're saying that website is wrong?

Magic number for Ottawa to finish ahead of Tampa is 5.

BTW Tampa plays both toronto and Boston, in their next two games, if they win both, that only helps Ottawa perhaps pass one or both of those teams, with your scenario of Ottawa getting 5 points............. are you accounting for the leafs and Bruins losings?

The fact is, that Ottawa, never iced a line up this season with everyone healthy and or available ...........they were always missing someone, that is healthy, would have been in the lineup.

I could list the number of players that were either injured, or not available, but I think you know this to be a fact.

If Ottawa had NOT made the deals that brought in a few players at or before the TDL, they'd be icing a team with half of the players called up from the AHL, for the past 10 games.

- D0PPELGANGER

I doubt there is a single team that iced their 100% roster, more than a handful of games, this season.

And if you're counting Macarthur, then hell, the Leafs have been one of the teams impacted more than most in the NHL, with guys like Lupul, Horton, and Robidas missing so many games. the Leafs would be the cup favourite if those guys were 100%.

That's why teams with good solid depth do well. And others, who have guys like Phaneuf, Ceci, Borowiecki, into top pairing roles, or Bobby Ryan simply in a top 6 role, will fail.

Yes, that website is wrong.

Easy run-down:
Toronto wins all but one game(vs Tampa)
Boston wins all but one game (also vs Tampa)
Ottawa wins 2 games vs Detroit, gets a point vs the Islanders.
Tampa wins out the season.

How do those standings look?

edit: odds don't matter when talking about the number required to eliminate a team. you're just wrong again, because you blindly repeated something without thinking for yourself.

Well here's another website " that must be wrong" that tells me that Tampa, can't finish first or seventh in the Conference, and " needs help from other teams " to finish 2nd, 3rd or 8th.

It also shows Ottawa needs 3 wins to secure 3rd.............. so it must be wrong, right?

IN today's paper ......
Guy Boucher said there’s no chance Cody Ceci (leg), Marc Methot (finger) and winger Zack Smith (undisclosed) will return before the playoffs.

“Let’s be honest here, Ceci, Smith and Methot won’t be back for the (regular) season,” Boucher said Monday morning. “It’s highly unlikely any of those three will be back.

“(Karlsson) is day-to-day. Up to now, there hasn’t been any changes. If there is, they’ll let me know. I know he was on the ice today. I haven’t gotten any information back yet.”

Leafs management has said all along this year not to get excited about this season, as it would be a long rebuilding phase. Ottawa on the other hand was supposed to be a good team and contend for the cup. Who's in a better spot right now?

If it says that Ottawa needs 5 points to eliminate Tampa, then yes, it is wrong.

Edit: that site says that 3 Ottawa wins guarantees them 3rd in the Atlantic, and the 2nd wildcard spot. So it's messed up, but it also agrees that they need 6 points to control their own fate.

Yes, you beat me to the punch, was just thinking about this in the shower and few minutes ago, and realized I mistook "games" for "points".

The magic number (5) is the number of games, a combination of wins by Ottawa and losses by Tampa, to prevent Tampa from supplanting the Sens from the playoffs, and vice versa for Tampa.

So it was my mistake that messed up this issue, so I apologize for everyone else who did not catch this mistake.

So the leafs magic number to prevent the Sens from overtaking them is 10, 5 wins for the leafs, combined with 5 losses for the Sens...... again vice versa for the Sens.

They had 8 dmen on the roster at the deadline, so they need 4 injuries to qualify for an emergency callup.

Basic roster management administration that a good management team would a solid grasp of.

I guess seeing a 19 year old from the Swiss league saving another franchise, or a 19 year old from the O saving even another one gives people all kinds of hope.

as good as Matthews and McDavid are, there were quite a few other players that played parts I both teams success.

and Thomas Chabot is not, and never will be, the caliber of Matthews and mcdacid.

but I suppose melnickel has never been one for realism.

I agree Prock, but he certainly could give them a boost. They're a playoff team ( looks like) without him so it's not like they're expecting him to drag them out of the basement.

I'm not saying he will because I don't know enough about the player. Sometimes kids do come and and play fearlessly though and really add something to a team.

To an extent, Gardiner did his first season it TO.

The issue is with ceci, EK and methot out, they actually do need a difference maker and are not looking like a sure thing for the playoffs.

Without 3 of their top 4 Dman they just plain ran out of gas against Winnipeg.

They have nothing left physically.

I think they are in deep trouble.

Don't think Chabot makes a difference even though he is near the top in Q playoff scoring.
