Laine = Winger with Wheeler and Schiefele, both all-star candidates.

Matthews = Center, getting 1st line attention from other teams, with two rookie wingers, who has hit more posts and crossbars lately than Laine has goals. He is probably in a 10 game stretch that will be as bad as it gets for most of his career.

and yet, is somehow still among the rookie leaders.

Detroit looks much better than I expected. I think they finish ahead of the Sens and both ahead of the Leafs.

... unless the Leaf get D help

Spatso will always lend a helping hand if D is involved.

Det has been sinking since a good start. I don't think they are good.

I think the Leafs are paying a huge price for having let the Sens steal Phaneuf for a collection of misfits and retreads. I understand that this is a really painful matter for many blue and white loyalists. But it is merely a statement of the obvious.

The Leafs have a 3.50 GAA. The goaltending has been okay. The problem is not in net. The Leafs desperately need a veteran presence on the back end to stabilize play in their own end. Obviously, Phaneuf is not going back. But, they need someone that can help them out.

I may be in the minority in thinking the Leafs would have a better on-ice product with Phaneuf on the team this year.

That being said, part of the rebuild was a culture shift, and that involved getting rid of the old guard. With that in mind I think we all knew that it would be hard to move Phaneuf'a cap without taking back another albatross, unless he was moved to a budget team that had no real intention of ever spending to the cap or competing for the cup, that just had to make moves to placate their fanbase, even if those moves were terrible deals.

And thats exactly what happened. And on the plus side it bought us long-term cap relief to improve the team as our prospects develop... and Ottawa saved some cash. It's rare that both teams in a trade accomplish their objectives.

yes and no.

the only dmen making enough to make it possible to switch one for one are Gardiner and Rielly. does he make the team better if it costs the leafs one of them?

obviously not given that he had fallen behind bothim on the depth chart by the time he was dumped.

however, yes, if you could slit him in on the 3rd pairing salary ignored he would make the team better.

The comparisons I am seeing so far for Laine is Kovalchuk and Heatley ... Ovechkin is in a league of his own.

Holy poop...didnt realize Brassard was so poopty

also dont forget

Bobby Ryan - 3 goals

Nick Richie - 4 goals
Silfverberg - 5 goals

Luckily Ryans contract only goes to 2022 ..fir 7.2 mil

Also with the #10 pick..the sens could have drafted Larkin, Fabbri, Pastrnak Kapanen instead of Richie

Win now moves...are helping the Sens lose now

Ottawa has less regulation wins than Toronto. This is most unfortunate since I learned in this thread that those are more important than actual total points.

Leafs are fun to watch, the best players every night are rookies. they are putting up stats the Leafs have not seen from young players like that ever.

Good time to be a Leafs fan

Leafs are just two points back of Ottawa with more ROW and a better goal differential.

Ottawa's strategy of making money-saving "win now" moves seems to be going as well as it could have been.
