We didn't get anything of value .. except those 4 glorious years where the junk we took from Ottawa is all gone and they get to enjoy Phaneuf at 7+ per

Some of the arguments you hear from Sens fans are hilarious. They're still convinced they got some great asset.

"We got rid of a bunch of garbage and got a decent second pairing dman out of it"

Now, Phaneuf is not terrible, but he's not going to carry a pairing either. Neither is Ceci, so they're still left with a bit of a problem on their D. It's shocking that they thought the league's worst defensive team was going to have their problems solved with the addition of Phaneuf. He won't last as a total tire fire, but he's never going to be the solution that the tire fire that was already there needs either.

"His salary is what really matters to us, not the cap hit, and his salary is lower than his cap hit."

Great, but
a) he's not really worth his salary either.
b) he's only getting worse.
c) the idea that his cap hit is bad doesn't matter to Ottawa is flawed. Because cap hit matters to almost all teams, and having a bad one makes him unmoveable. It makes him less of an asset (or in this case, a bigger liability).

- prock

Its not impossible but it's highly improbably to expect to compete in this league, especially consistently, without taking the cap into consideration.

Well his salary is 7.5 this season only, and then plays out at 7.0, 6.5, 6.5 & 5.5 respectively.

He could also be dealt or bought out at any point. But as of now, he's taking a regular shift on the second D pairing, and that is much better than what was happening last season.

Why leaf fans obsess on financial matters, and not what is happening on the ice is mind boggling........... but I guess whatever floats your boat.

a) there is long list of NHLers who are not worth their salaries, and every team has some on their roster, it's a fact of life.
b)every player in his age range will get worse over time, everyone knew that going into the deal, no surprises.......... but he's better than who he replaced, for now.
c)his cap hit does not matter to Ottawa, and if he was unmovable, how did he end up in Ottawa?? The shorter the term on his diminishing contract (7.5, 7.0, 6.5, 6.5 & 5.5) actually will make it cheaper to buy him out at a future date, or perhaps trade him at the deadline.

Same way Scott Gomez ended up in Montreal, I guess. Some duped an idiot GM into thinking a declining player into his 30s could rejuvenate his career and be of use.

How did that end?

He's a serviceable guy, but yes, he was pretty unanimously considered one of the worst contracts in the NHL, which basically rendered him negative value. A quick google of "worst NHL contracts" going back a year, will tell you that's true. To get rid of him, at the cost of a taking on a few smaller 1 or 2 year contracts, so the Leafs can properly continue to build, and not only that, dump him on a divisional opponent, when he'll be a real problem and anchor just when the Leafs are looking to start emerging as a top team in the East, is a major coup.

He's also the least liked or respected or over rated..can't remember which. Remember they did those player polls?

it was overrated. I always found those stupid though. The players were basically looking at the worst players in the league with $5M+ contracts, and obviously, with a $7M+ contract, for a guy worth maybe $2M or $3M at most, he's going to be at the top of that list.

Most fans around the league did not rate him very highly. He wasn't "overrated". Just overpaid.

He definitely is one of the least respected. No one seems to fear him. Rookies will go at it with him, trying to instigate some action. Non fighters will go with him. Hell, even Staal went with him.

It's one thing you'll notice when watching him. Literally no one backs down

On the other hand, Ottawa got rid of a lot of "scrap" from their roster in that trade, players that no longer figured in their future plans, at the cost of acquiring a player, who is currently taking a regular shift for the Senators....... and it freed up the money required to sign Hoffman...... so the leafs got what they wanted, and so did the Sens.

BTW, if you googled "worst NHL contracts" today, would Toskala....I mean... Andersen now show up on that list?
