I know a few things for certain:

1)the team unwilling to spend isn't in a better position.
2)Karlsson is a very good offensive player, but not worthy of the Norris, by any stretch of the imagination... unless they officially change the qualification to "most points for a d-man"
3)It's funny to see that Phaneuf is now a very important player in the eyes of some of the more trollish fans.

I expect Chabot to play minutes in a 3rd pairing role. I expect him to develop along the same lines as the Sens have brought Ceci along. I do think that Chabot has a higher ceiling than Ceci.

3rd pairing D-men generally are defensive roles .............. Chabot will be better served by playing in the AHL before playing full time in the NHL

Doesn't mean he deserves them.

seems this year the media was reminded that the Norris isn't handed out on points. If they remember that, he won't win another.

Just because we wont spend follishly doesnt mean we dont spend
Nothing wrong with Phaneuf and how little we gave to get him ,EDM could have easily used this guy .Toronto retained money up front ,as was a motivated seller

- top shelf 15

But the Phaneuf trade pretty much confirms that Ottawa isn't willing to spend: trade for a guy who has a huge cap hit but lower salary, because the cap hit is secondary to the internal budget.

Personally I don't think Phaneuf is a bad player at all... I'm just laughing that the same posters who thought his contract was ridiculous are now defending it because he's on their team.

Seriously, Leaf fans are just too thin skinned and incapable of distinguishing teasing from substance. Perhaps, this is entirely understandable given the humiliation that you have endured over the past 10 years. Kessel, Phaneuf and JVR are good hockey players. It is not the players that are the problem it is the Leafs that are problematic.

Ottawa management believes they have a contending team. I believe the same. They were solid last year until Turris was hurt. Love the pairing of Ceci and Phaneuf and I expect the Sens to shave 20 goals against off of last year.

Brian Murray has a history of building teams that become super competitive the year after he steps down as GM (Detroit, Anahiem).

So you and Management believe it...great, I assume they believed it going into last season also

The Sens were around .500 when Turris was shut down...I guess thats solid

How are the Sens going to shave off 20 goals?

And the Brian Murray stepping down thing...is that another Sensalytic stat?

Neither do I even when he was with Toronto i didnt bad mouth him .Toronto was kinda stuck when they gave him that deal ,he was already being paid 6.5 if i remember correctly .And they would have never been able to replace him ,through trade or F/A ,and the management at the time was still hoping for team success with him.People sometimes forget how hard it is to find decent top 4 defenders

I thought both Kessel and Phaneuf were good assets caught in a very bad Leaf situation (I think JVR falls into the same circumstance this year). Phaneuf will be going from a #1 in Toronto to playing a #4 in Ottawa. It is a huge opportunity for him to step up and make a difference. Not unlike Kessel dropping down from a 1st line to a 3rd line for the Penguins. Not sure why so many Leaf fans are so desperate for them to fail?

Well, that happens when you can find 30 better prospects on other teams.

Realistically, these things are all subjective, if you were to come up with a list, I think after about the 25 mark, if you take the most optimistic view you can of Chabot, White, or Brown, they MIGHT fit in. On average, I'm guessing late 20s or around 30th, and pessimistically, maybe mid 30s.

I can guarantee that 99% of people outside of Ottawa fans would take all of these guys ahead of Chabot, White, Brown or any other prospect in the system, from the last few drafts:

Auston Matthews
Laine
Puljujarvi
Dubois
Provorov
Nylander
Strome
Marner
Tkachuk
Rantenen
Werenski
Juolevi
Kyle Conner
Aho
Sanheim
Sergachev
Clayton Keller
Brock Boeser
Shea Theodore
Alex Nylander
Barzal
Zacha
Konecny
Dvorak

Just looking at the draft lists, I think those are probably all easily ahead.

then there are the ones that are probably questionable, for one reason or another

Vesey
Morrisey
Tyson Jost
Buchnevich
Chycrun (I would easily, weird to me he dropped)
Timo Meier
Lawson Crouse
Kempe? (I admit, I've not followed too closely recently)

Throw in some of the highest rated goalie prospects around, and there you go.

I think a couple of them might come close, depending on one's interpretation, but I think it's pretty safe to say none of the crack top 25 lists, and depending on the scout, or whatever, there may be a few lists out there where they won't crack the top 30.
