I am a huge believer in peak performance theory. You can usually track the build up to top performance and project the downward trend line from year to year. Ryan and Phanuef obviously peaked very early in their careers. Decline has set in. Players seldom, if ever, are able to reverse the progressive nature of the decline. The rate of goals scored per game year over year gives you a solid basis for projection.

Hoffman is next up to see this happen, likely having peaked in the last couple of years. The sens will be stuck paying another player based on past and not future performance.

I know Melnyk has no use for analytics in Hockey because of Horses or some dumb poop he said..but for Hoffman he probably could have saved a few million by locking him up a while ago to a nice value contract..the underlying numbers showed he was good..but instead nickel and dime him until you have to trade him because he is to expensive

This is Great
The Sens have 1 playoff series win in 9 seasons, have a very average prospect pool, think Dion Phaneuf is going to help the team win...2 highest cap hits are declining fast

We can pretend we're not screwed!

- senstroll

It's pretty funny watching him get all worked up. Look at the anger and frustration in these posts:

Duh, what part of last place are you missing. Make the playoffs once in 10 years but somehow this translates into heading in the right direction.
- spatso

Hockey is a great game because they insist that the scoreboard and clock and standings be used as gauges of success. It is a summer tradition that fans of the blue and white come here and pretend that none of these matter. They chatter on about next season. It has been the same for 10 years. It will be the same again next year. Losers are what losers do and the Leafs have been no shows for every year but one.

And, the one year that they did make the playoffs they did the biggest collapse in playoff history in their series with the Bruins. Why would anybody think that next year will be different? We know that summer is let's pretend season for the blue kool aid crowd. You are having a great off season in once again winning the bragging rights.

- spatso

The sad state of affairs of the Sens is sinking in with him.

They're still concerned that he has not been able to score, at the same pace in the final 20 games of a season, as he does in the previous 62 games.

So you're wrong about the lack of analytics use by teams other than the leafs.

Look if the Leafs are a poster boy for analytics than the analytics movement is in free fall towards a near death experience. Leafs were an horrendous last place team last year. They will be worse this year. And, we need to know it is more than the fault of analytics.

How were they a horrendous last place team? They had more pts last year than they did the previous year. They had more pts than the Sabres the previous 2 years.

We'll see if they are worse this year than last, but I don't think so. The talent they're adding > the talent they didn't bring back.

It's funny when he's angry. He needs to convince himself that the Leafs will be worse, and the reason for that is, the Sens have become the dumping ground for the Leafs. So, he wants to believe that Dion Phaneuf is a good player and the Leafs will somehow be a worse team because of it, while the Sens, of course, will be better.

We, of course, all know better, including him. But let him vent. Let him keep up this charade of how well the Sens have done.

jfc I really thought you might be a tad smarter than that

A complete overhaul and tear down of an organization and Roster doesnt (frank)ing happen in a few months ..

poop the Leafs are still trying to Dump bad players off like they Did with Dion from the past regime...thankfully there are still bad teams taking on those contracts

Hey keep it simple. The body of evidence is pretty substantial. Only once in 10 years have the Leafs made the playoffs. The year they made the playoffs against Boston, they offered up the biggest playoff choke in the history of the game.

Now fans are trying to convince themselves they are something other than a last place team. Hey guys, check the scoreboard.

Stop crying Spazzo. The "scoreboard" also shows the Sens are the worst defensive team in the league, a non-playoff team, that has won a single playoff series in nearly the same timeframe.

Stop trying to convince yourself things are okay in Sens land. Take off those red and mustard goggles. You'll see a pretty bad team, who couldn't even convince their own last two captains there was a future there. And now they're collecting the has beens that couldn't get it done it Toronto.

The fantastic senators analytical department has discovered ppg can vary over the course of a season.

In sure Dopps and spazz can give us a good run down on how it shows Bobby Ryan is better than Kessel.

I think the team that traded for Phaneuf to make the playoffs but missed the playoffs is clearly in the better position than the team who got 1st overall for doing the same thing. Missing the playoffs.

Last place is last place.

Matthews did not have a particularly strong development camp.

Leafs getting ready for another year of futility.

But, nobody needs to worry about that right now.

It is summer and the Leafs are getting ready for the annual parade planning party.

I am part of the Sens fans that loved the deal for Phaneuf. We will probably hear the name of Larry Murphy a lot over this next season.
