They'd have more credibility if they didn't discount the leafs for picking overagers and applaud the sens for doing the same...... And if they knew enough about the players they are critiquing to know what position they play.

Their analysis of brown is way off.

The funny thing is the Leafs could have skipped the draft all together, Matthews included, and still had the better prospect pool, with a similar quality NHL roster.

Perhaps you're unaware that team can't exchange contract numbers, the window is only Allowed to gauge interest.

Love it when morons try to prove you wrong with incorrect info. So entertaining. Dance monkey dance.

Really? Are you going to pretend that money and term isn't discussed? That's pretty (frank)ing naive. 14 page contracts announced 1 minute after free agency opens and you think this hasn't been discussed at all?

Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to suggest someone else is stupid.

There's plenty of data to support his claim.

This has to be worst signing from free agency.

Although I am impressed that Leafs stayed away from giving up some of those retirement contracts. UFA day is really bizarre. There were a few clever moves (Campbell in a one year deal to Hawks) but, for the most part, all the guys will be busts and end up getting bought out in a couple of years (I changed my mind, Lucic was the worst signing, Polak not so bad because it is just one year of torture).

- spatso

a 1 year 2.25 mil contract is the worst signing

oh..wiat you changed your mind because you gave it 2 seconds of (frank)ing thought ..

However, the leafs swung for the fences and missed with Stamkos .............. who clearly was part of their plan.

If they had offered him a better deal than the Lightning ended up doing, he would have signed with the leafs.

Better luck with John Tavares.................

you are really trying to ge the miles out of this

you are trying to spin it like the leafs were too cheap? ..like keeping your cap situaiton under control is a bad thing

When the Sens keep their "Cap under control" all you leaf fans claim the Sens owner is too cheap ................ but when the leafs keep their "Cap under control" ...... it's sound business management.

So clearly when the leafs plan, which was rumoured for almost a year, hinged on signing Stamkos, when he became an UFA ....... and they had their shot in the Five Day negotiating window (prior to July 1st) and fell well short, because ownership did not want to pony up the dough to bring a Stanley Cup to toronto .......... well if you dish out the "cheap shots" you have to take them, when the toronto management and ownership clearly low balled Stamkos.

Stamkos was "Plan A" ..... and there was no "Plan B" ........ they rolled the dice and it came up snake eyes ............. unless you think you Matt Martin was "plan B"

It's been said multiple times on this thread by Sens fans that Phaneuf's contract isn't a problem because his salary is lower than his cap hit.

That's because the Sens are a budget team that doesn't really care about the cap, as they never really risk hitting it, whereas the Leafs use their money to get rid of cap by buying up a guy like Horton, who's cap can disappear whenever they need it to, but who they still have to pay.

Stamkos wasn't "Plan A"... he was Plan "maybe we can speed this up by adding a top line center for nothing but $$, so long as we don't handicap ourselves when the trio of elite forward prospects starts looking for their big contracts".

You're owner said "we can sign any coach we want, but it will come out of the player budget"

The leafs are one of if not biggest franchise earning team financially.

I hear the oilers are about to acquire a big, fast, ppg winger for a 2nd/3rd pairing shutdown guy.

Exciting times!

Leafs were a bad last place team last year. They are not as good a team as what they were at this time last year. They gave up a lot of talent and have not replaced the missing pieces. I don't think another last place finish and lottery pick is a bad thing.

I think its clear the Leafs have a plan in place...they are not deviating from it to sign stamkos to a contract thats just stupid ...I am sure they made an offer and werent going to blow the cap just for 1 player... he is not make or break for the Leafs at this point.

There is a difference between the Leafs being smart with the cap money and the Sens being cheap

- senstroll

Yeah, it makes no sense. They didn't really give up any talent. What they did is send some mediocre, easily replaceable players, packing for picks. A couple of depth centres, a depth winger, and an overpaid dman who could no longer crack the Leafs' top pairing, and was getting sheltered minutes, is all easily offset by some of the best young talent that the league has to offer, in Auston Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. I'd say there may be some growing pains, but somewhere around the 20 game mark (enough time for these guys to acclimate themselves to the NHL), and the contribution of any of the castoffs the Leafs sent packing will be offset.

Does that mean they'll be a top team? No, they'll probably still be a team near the bottom. But there was nothing they cut loose that that would have made a difference for anything more than a month or two, and will probably be a better team pretty quickly.

Tough to say. I think he probably stays. He's dominated the CHL like hasn't been seen in a long time, time to move on.
