I'm sure the same people who think this are the ones that thought Ceci took over the top dman spot at the world championships.

Until they realized they were just giving their top guys a rest, while the plugs got some ice against France and Hungary.

- prock

Wrong. Ceci had a great tournament and played exceptionally well. The change in his ice time was the direct result of adding Ellis to the roster. Ellis took over as #1D, especially in terms of power play time. Certainly, no shame in that for Ceci. It was his first World Championship tournament. Ellis is a fine Dman and I am sure most Ottawa fans and the Sens were thrilled by his performance.

The same place this came from?:

"The Toronto Maple Leafs have underwent a tremendous organizational overhaul in the past 18 months, and, as a result, the team’s prospect group is one of the best in the NHL. They’ll add to their already-impressive group in the upcoming draft, where they currently own 12 picks."

Nobody disputes that the Leafs are finally getting around to doing it the right way. After years of wandering in the wilderness credit is fully deserved for Shanahan and others for getting the team on a proper rebuild cycle. The Leafs are doing okay. Some Leaf fans, on the other hand, are struggling with having to concede that many of us, including me, were right in our condemnation of Fletcher, Burke, Nonis and a bunch of others who refused to stop the insanity. Everyone now wants to pretend it never happened. More important they want to deny their supportive role, their complicity in encouraging this grand hockey fraud.

So, when you see Kessel leading the pack as likely Conn Smyth winner it should not be dismissed as meaningless. It is part of the collateral damage that needed be paid in order to right the wrong. But you need to ask yourself where were you when it really mattered. I know where you were, you were on here defending the insanity of what was going on insisting that the Blue and White kool aid was perfect for everyone to see. Now, finally the Leafs are doing it right and you want a free pass.

Well you don't deserve it. You were part of the problem. You never stood up to MLSE, you never said what was wrong, you drank the kool aid and you believed them through all their incompetence and lies. You sound the same as you did with Nonis, as you did with Burke and you expect people to take you seriously. Not a chance.

Dear god, seeing Melnyk penny pinch away any chances at building a good team has made you really unstable.

Really, do any of you guys ever think? Do you ever read or evaluate readily available public information? No other fan chants like the blue and white chorus. Over the years you have become so bitter and so unhappy all you can do is try and search out fault beyond the speck in your own eye. For years, we listened to blue and white fans dump on the rebuilding Oilers repeating that the Oilers are the worst team in Canada. When the Oiler fans said they were rebuilding around elite talent you still kept chanting "your worse than us." Now you have nowhere to go. Clearly the numbers tell us you are worst team in the NHL by a long and painful stretch. Enjoy the rebuild, it is the right thing to do. But, don't waste your time trying to create a mythology around the Leafs getting ready to challenge serious contenders.

And, so, have you actually looked at a projection of this year's spending for the Senators in relation to the cap? Have you compared likely Sens spending with the projected player spending by the Leafs? I did not think so!

Which is exactly where you are with the senators right now. Exactly. You are part of their problem. The perpetual 10th place finishing team.

You too sound the same. Always making excues for bad moves like drafting Cowen. Trading for Phaneuf. Etc.

I know where you are and it's where you say we were.

So, when a budget team is projected to spend a lot in a season, what does that tell you?

Let me do the heavy lifting for you.

1)They're "going for it", which, given their roster is laughable, but somewhat makes sense given the dearth of futures
2) They're gonna be making cuts.

And just as a little post script... don't you think it at least makes sense to wait for UFA season to start before talking about what teams are going to be spending? Do you also think that there might be a few more costs associated with running a hockey team than just what the players make?

True, there's the cost of all the buyouts and salary retention.

Over 7 MILLION in salary retention next year ............. I wonder how that's a good thing?

Simple answer.

The Leafs can afford it and the Sens can't therefore the Leafs are in a much better position!!!

Unless you're a shareholder............

i think we need to keep things in perspective. Kessel will likely win the Conn Smyth. Laine is the favourite for the Calder next year and Ottawa fans are very happy with the Phaneuf deal. So what part of the pattern are you missing?

I talk hockey. I talk substance, I try to avoid personal insults, I am courteous, I am respectful. The mere fact that you disagree with my opinion does not mean that what I said was sincere and meaningful for others, although perhaps not for you.

Seems to me you're far more interested in responding when people just laugh at you, because you like the reaction.

You may be surprised to know that I was highly critical of Melnyk three years ago and his inability to clearly and honestly set out his avoidance of budget concerns. I do believe that the team has had a large infusion of cash from another party (perhaps a partner). The Sens will start the season with a player budget around $65m (less than $5m in available cap).
