Does anyone think Laine might be the better choice?

It's funny to see where you've gone from the start of this thread. At first it was about how badly the Leafs need to rebuild. Now you're arguing who they should take first overall.

Seriously, I try not to respond to Doppleganger or this spatso dude. They are like scorned ex lovers. So hateful and full of lies. (frank) them! Plus I regret ever posting in this thread.

Periodically amateurs drop in on this thread get chewed up and whine about our being too mean to them. If you can't handle the truth you should go back to Leaf lunch where everyone talks about the Leafs competing for a Stanley Cup next year.

Thank you my dear Roger. I am a huge fan of how Shanahan has approached everything about the rebuild. I like all the selections they have made, I especially like the Marner pick. I do not like the triumphalism that now has some talking about the Leafs being a playoff contender next year. I do enjoy my role of bringing truth to the abundance of naiveté among the blue and white kool aid crowd. There are a few years left to go before the Leafs can escape the bottom realm. Just be patient.

I have always said Leaf fans are great fans that deserve more than they have been given over the last decade. Enjoy a young hockey team and watch them grow. Try to stay in reality for another year before calling for changes that would accelerate the rebuild. This is what everyone, including me, has wanted. Don't screw up the wonderful sense of incremental improvement through premature exclamation. The Leafs are still a long way away from being contender. Listen to those folks who talk about Marner not being ready next year or how difficult the jump is going to be for all the guys who are moving up. Don't screw up the positive mood that has finally emerged. Be content with knowing that things are finally being done in the right way. That my dear Roger was all I was asking for and so many from Leaf nation became enraged with my modest interventions. Now that it is finally happening, be grateful. You do not have to acknowledge the fact that I was and have always been entirely correct on this matter. I do, however, appreciate your very kind words on the history of my beliefs.

But, do hear my caution about the need to look at Laine before climbing on the Matthews wagon. Laine is an Ovechkin type player who is going to have a huge career in the NHL. He competes hard and does the hardest thing of all....he scores goals. Part of the fun of having the first pick is knowing that you have the choice, the pick of the litter. Don't close your eyes to the possibility that Matthews may not be the best player available. Leafs have the rights to the best player available and are obligated to undertake a thorough and diligent exercise of evaluation.

Depends on the needs of the organization.

Agreed.

i think the only way to make complete and thorough player assessments is to base it on the most recent game only.

I also believe that it’s best not too watch the game, preferably just the highlights.

- Tumbleweed

even better, don't watch either, just read the "advanced stats" only.

It's actually a good problem to have. But they're now following the "build through the draft" path that many teams have followed, including the Sens, since the dawn of the Cap era.

Not that I follow leaf prospects as closely as you do, but just wonder where you think the top 4 prospects (including who they draft first overall) will be playing next season.

The management team appears to be thinking along the lines of NOT rushing top prospects into the NHL so would be interested when you see them (top 4 prospects) reaching the NHL for good.

why do leafs fans get so sensitive when someone initiates some actual discussion about this rebuild and the challenges that still remain as the process moves forward?

its fascinating to see the hive mind in action as the wagons get circled.

This isn't even a question anymore. The Leafs have the best prospect pool of all 30 teams.
Ottawa's big move was taking Dion Phaneuf off our hands.

They defend their illusion that everything leaf related, is 100% correct. The Burke hiring, the Kessel trade, the Raycroft trade............ it's an endless list.

Leafs - will finish with a top 10 pick and have a loaded draft ahead of them. Will max out spending if/when draft picks develop. Outlook 5-7 Years: Ceiling - Future Stanley Cup Contender. Floor - Edmonton rebuild. Boom/Bust team.

Sens - Budget team with a handful of very good players. Outlook 5-7 Years: Ceiling one playoff round victory. Floor - 10th place. Perpetual mediocre team.

- Tumbleweed

Bump.

D0pps, the terrible state of your team must be causing you to live in an illusionary state about leaf fans.

Being a sens fan would probably cause me to make things up about other fans, so i don't blame you.

The Sens can't even afford a good coach. They tried to cheap-out to get Boudreau.
Get Melnyk out of there.

I eagerly await the follow-up tweet tomorrow: "Boudreau left Ottawa without signing a deal. The reported offer was somewhere around 3 years $500k."

Sens hire guy Boucher

Better than some of the other names thrown out there. They should have offered bb anything to coach the sens. Big miss there.

No idea how Boucher will be as a coach in the nhl today. Could be really good or really bad

Signing the cheaper coach was a good move. They can already barely afford to pay players, imagine they had a highly paid coach as well?
