leafs only 9 points behind the Sens, and they have two games in hand ............. is there a possibility that the leafs could challenge for a WC spot, IF they do as you (or someone) suggested and bring up Nylander (and others) at some point this season?

mathy projections have the Leafs and sens pretty close
I hope they trade off players instead of pretend to be a playoff team

BUt when they trade of players, they will need to call up some of these incredible future NHL superstars, form the marlies........and they may drive the leafs towards a PO spot, don't you think?

Without Bernier's horrific goaltending the Leafs would likely be in a playoff spot. I think it's ended their chances of challenging for one. They got 1 point out of Bernier in his first 11 starts. Yes, 1. Reimer on the same team put up some of the best #'s in the entire NHL.

But if toronto's goal-tending improves even just 15%, and the coach's "system" gets through to the players, and they stick to the coach's game plan and system, it's possible the leafs could oust a team from a WC spot.

We'd be twice as good if all our players gave an extra 5%.

How about players returning back to form, from injury?

I know Ottawa needs to have that happen soon, as there are too many players, currently playing "out their roles" on the team, and the sooner the Sens get players like Ryan, Ceci, Michalek and MacArthur back into their line up. A healthy Phillips would be nice to have, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

The Leafs have a shot at being very solid and a surprise team next year. I don't see them doing anything this year but working hard and staying bottom 5.

Do you think the Best Coach in the World will not allow his team to improve in the standing is and when all these future NHL superstars are called up from the marlies as soon as the WJC are finished, or at the trade deadline when the leafs sell off their rentals?

9th with a weak prospect pool and a very cheap owner.

Ottawa is going nowhere. They're in on of the worst positions you can be in. And I know this because when the Leafs kept finishing 9th after the 04-05' lockout Sens fans told me so.

All they care about is developing their young players. This season is a write-of. Babcock and everyone else will not bring anyone up. There's no rush to "Improve" the team until next season.

So Nylander does NOT play in the NHL this season?

Then how is the roster filled, when all of the the leafs "rentals" are traded for picks?

When the Sens "keep finishing in 9th" then you can draw this conclusion.

But your assessment does not account for the Facts that over the past 15 seasons, the Sens have made the playoffs in 12 of those seasons, so if by "going nowhere" you mean going to the playoffs, then I'll have to assume you rather the leafs don't ever make the playoffs, and just keep being a lottery team.

Oh and Ottawa has 5.943 Million in Cap space, and the leafs have 5.658 Million, so a difference of 285K makes the leafs a Big spender, and the Sens "very cheap" ................yeah that makes sense

If the Leafs determine he'd be better off learning the game in the AHL and not using up a year of RFA status then yes. He'd already be up if they wanted him here right now I think.

I really could care less about the past 15 years. It's about what is going on right bow that I was commenting on.

Are you really trying to dispute that the Sens are a big spender like the Leafs?

I think their plan was for him to play in the AHL, send him to the WFC, and after that they'd wait and see.

I see the point about not burning a year of RFA eligibility , but he could play less than 10 games in the NHL, and not burn a year (I think?)

If you mean covering up your spending mistakes by shipping out terrible contracts, taking one back and burying them in the AHL or on the IRL.......... then no, toronto has Ottawa beaten in that department,

But when you claim that the Sens have a "Cheap owner" and he's spending just 285K less than the leafs are, on their respective rosters, then you're not making a lot of sense, and seem to be misinformed.

Ottawa's overall salary total has risen as younger players re-sign in the off season, and that's the nature of any level headed re-build. Ottawa is a number of year ahead of where the leafs are, and they will do the same thing once their prospects on the AHL roster make it to the NHL club and move beyond their ELCs.

A few years ago leaf fans were crowing about their team spending to the Cap, as the way to go, and now that they've taken the same route as the Senators have taken, all of a sudden what the leafs are doing is the way to go.

Been there done that.......... Sens are in a better position than the leafs as they're a few years ahead in the same re-build route, and will contend for the Cup sooner.

The leafs have always been one of the leaders in spending. They are spending $5mil on a coach. They have one if the most expensive front offices/scouting dept.

Saying the leafs spend on the level of the frugal sens is hilariously delusional.
